hello, new here but have been model making for 35 plus years. just finished my flak 88 diorama and thought i'd share it. been away from model building for quite a while but trying to find the time to get back into it. lots has changed since i was away. tried some of the new techniques people talk about such as hair spray, mig pigments, painting chipping and holding back on the drybrushing. this diorama has 17 figures in it, most i have ever tried to crowd into one scene. hope you enjoy.

i hope i have linked these pics right. happy modelling

Hi ,

Great looking diorama , I really like the groupings of figures they work really well. Particularly the loader and commander figures, by the gun, they work together really well. Also the rifleman trying to see what is happening is great he gives the impression that things are happening off the base.

fantastic job.

Looks great!
Nice landscape, plants and vehicles!

But I only have to say, that the empty shells/cartridges are to clean.
They are to glossy for a "used-style".

greetings...

Great use of non-familiar gear, the truck and trailer are great, the figure getting a piggy back ride - all great.

The overall tone and style are nicely done.

Excellent dio, all painted to a high standard and with plenty going on to maintain the interest (without it being all chaotic and directionless).

Nice work.

thanks everyone for the kind words of encouragement. i posted here because i like that people give constructive comments on people's work (without being too harsh). i noticed the same thing that Soeren has pointed out: the brass shells come off as very shiny in the photos. in real life they are fairly weathered but the camera lighting seems to have washed that out and they appear quite bright, almost mint from the packaging.

and hello to prasert, i saw your pics posted here and thought i'd join the fun.

cheers, mh

An Awesome Dio ! I like it alot. As the Guys before me have stated, The overall composition of the Dio makes for a realistic scene. The Landscapeing, Vehicle and Figures compilment each other. Great Job ! what did you use for the snow ? Regards, milvehfan

Great looking diorama, the layout and the setting of the figures. What did you use for the snow? It looks so realistic espically on the slight slope and the foot prints. Keep up the great work. Looking foward to your future builds.

thanks once again for the kind replies, it means a lot as i just recently got the courage to consider them good enough to share online. here are some details for those who asked for further info:

Snow is Woodland Scenics "Snow - Soft Flake" (SN140) applied initially by sprinkling it thinly over diluted white glue/water. i tried putting it on dry and then the diluted glue but it was hard to control. the best way and how i did get it to do what i wanted was to take a small container (about an ounce/shot glass) mix water and white glue 70/30 then pour in the "snow" until it was a semi-thick slurry. i then scooped out the snow and applied it with a oil paint palette knife.

it could then be pushed around and boot prints pushed in and pushed aside for the track marks. it is slow to cure so you have plenty of time to play around. highly recommend this technique for more than a skiff.

PS: i live in Canada, hence my unfortunate "expert" knowledge of snow

the 1/35 models are as follows:
Dragon Flak 88/36 Premium kit with metal barrel and figure set;
Lion Roar ks750 with sidecar and trailer; and
AFV Cub Leichte Zugkraftwagen 3t Sd.Kfz.11 Late Version.

the figures are a mix of Dragon, Alpine, Wolf and Warriors.

hope this helps people try out a snow diorama as well. cheers.

Great looking scene here, Meaty. I especially like the use of the lesser known figures and the interaction of all the players in the scene. Super ground work and painting. Thanks for sharing! What's next?
Cheers!

thanks everyone for the encouragement, my return to modeling has been about learning new techniques and trying out some of the new kit makers such as Lion Roar and those beautiful Alpine figures.

i've been building a Jagdpanther and have just finished stuffing the CMK interior kit into the new Dragon Late Production model. I got one of the new Miniart building kits for this next diorama, first time i use a plastic building. i am hoping to step up a notch in my figure painting. it's all about trying our best but this site is chock full of great work it sure does inspire me to try even harder.

cheers, mh

Hi Meaty, Love what you've done here. As everyone else has said, very well done. I like how you've done the snow and I'll be trying your technique out.
Keep up the good work!
