Following the very dark brown/black layer; I have mixed a dark earth color using Tamiya Dark Earth and Black and sprayed this mixture on the ares left untouched from the previous layer.

Tried to lighten up the hull plates:

I realized today that my tamiya flat red is kaput. It means I cannot spray the identification bar at the front.

Thus I've concentrated on the exhaust section.

I used vallejo's rust on the exhaust. After that applied a dark wash around. Folowing that used AK int. 's dark grime, engine oil and engine grime.

Here is the result:

The painting looks very promising. Good luck with that!
The only thing that always confuses me is with all this effort to fix Emhar's plastic, why nobody ever tries to fix those giant gaps. They are hard not to notice.

Do agree that it both looks good, and the gaps, especially at the bottom edge, are a bit disturbing. Must admit when I did the Airfix mk 1,I pulled the sponsons back off in order to fix the same issue, though I hadn't started painting by then.. .

I know the gaps issue, but as I've said before I can and will live with those defects both from the kit and from me.

I will now concentrate on the tracks. They need to be painted and weathered.

Making good progress. On steel tracks I usually undercoat them with Humbrol Matt 70 and then work towards what I want from there.

There is a fair bit of track exposed on the Churchill so this was my effort. Different setting though.

My plan for the tracks is as follows:

i. painted with burnt iron
ii. will paint with tamiya red brown to achieve a rust base
iii.will wash with black and brown
iv. will use metallic pigment on the protruded edges of the tracks that are in touch with hard ground.

what do you think?

Oykun, I'm not sure what colour you mean by burnt iron; a red brown colour sounds right, I would just suggest you go to the darker side of red brown rather than the lighter orangey side of the rust colours. It seems to me that the natural colour of these tracks is a very dark reddish brown. I think the black and brown washes are good - again, keep the metal itself dark is my suggestion. When I painted the Mark 1 tracks I primed with grey auto acrylic then washed with burnt umber and raw sienna oil paints.

Unless you have something in mind where the tank has been on a hard road, I would be very sparing with the metallic highlights. The action was mainly in rural areas, and the earth in northern France and Belgium is quite clay like, soft and heavy, when wet it is sticky and forms lumps. It contains hard stones as well, but not in very large amounts.

It's been a while since I've done anything on the Mk IV.

Accurate Armor's resin track set nearly forced me to leave modelling altogether...

I have finished the tracks with a final effort with the help of modelling gods...

I applied a gloss coat as can be seen from the images.

Dark wash, track wash, little bit of dry mud on the tracks, hair spray for the white/red region will follow hopefully.

I just today found this WIP thread and it looks like you've already started a track painting algorithm.






If not too late, I'd like to suggest my technique for replicating the picture you posted for example.

Track Painting 2
First, I aerosol can sprayed flat black over all for the base color coat.
Then followed with hobby acrylic tan/red color with a little ground up pastel powder mixed in.
After each coat dries, follow with another light coat until the depth and degree of effect is achieved.
The final coat or two will be the light dirt tan color with the same pastel mixture added.

Trank Painting 3
Apply the black/grime wash sparingly and randomly where you want. This wash does not have to contain the powdered pastel
Finally a light dry brush with 'steel' color

First can i say this build is amazing, very well done!

Secondly the timing is absolutely perfect on three accounts!
1. Im thinking about buying this kit with my xmas money as my LHS has two at the moment.
2 and 3: Im also thinking about the Accurate Armour tracks and Airwaves photo etch for my Emhar whippet tank. What are your opinions on these similar parts for your mark IV? How worth it are they?

For the airwaves photo etch set, although I've used it, I dont think it is a must.

However the tracks that come withing the box are really not so good. If yo have the patience and experience (which I did not have) with resin tracks I recommend using those.

Sorry I missed you last post, tracks and build are looking good. On the tracks you'd need to add some exposed steel on the edges and rims. A water matt black mixed with some steel would help. Once you've got a nice balance then let the mud flow and add in a few tufts of grass or tangled wire as needs be.

Nice paint job, colour looks right to me.

I'd love to see some new kits of the WW1 tanks with interiors, but you have done a fine job on this one from a sows ear to a silk purse.

Lovely work Oykun. I wish mine had turned out half as well - maybe I'll revisit it one day to do a better job.

I've not tried them myself but Panzershop.CZ do 20.5" and 26.5" replacement tracks for British WW1 tanks. They may be worth looking at?

Ken, it is too late for the tracks for me... The accurate armor tracks I used are pretty decent.

The weathering is not yet complete. I need to put on the decals first and then will apply streaking grime, pigments and some additional paint stripping.

I wish new moldings of these forgotten beasts are released with interiors probably. With this kit this is the extent of what I can do.

There will be a little base for the kit. Just a wall ruin and a cobblestone street.

The machine guns are from Resicast Lewis Guns set which are excellent. The 6 pounders are my products from aluminum tubing.

By the way I put on the decals will start weathering again.

I've made some progress this weekend.

The decals were applied. A little bit of chipping went on the decals using hair spray and brush.

The kit is still in gloss varnish. I'm going to apply some dried mud soon.

Here is the latest:
