From an Academy lower hull, MP upper hull, Tamiya turret, AFV tracks. The turret bin is scratched, and since these pics were taken, I've added a bromide fire extinguisher on the left rear. Anyone see anything I'm missing? I'm planning on doing the sand and green camo, pulled from an article a few years ago in "Panzer Aces", but not sure if it's appropriate.

Hi Russell,

Very nice build, one of my favourite subjects The things that come to mind that could be added are:

  • the sand shield fittings,
  • a board or rail between the track guards (fender thingies) so the jerry cans etc can be stored on the front of the vehicle,
  • most NZ Shermans had some form of stowage on the rear plate, be it a large bin similar to the one on the turret and/or ammo boxes and/or jerry can.

As for colour, I would go with either “Light Mud” and “Blue/Black” like the colours on the vehicle in the Tamiya Magazine your Sherman is on, or Olive Drab either the US version or the British S.C.C. 15. Time wise, the colour switch seems to have taken place around mid 1944 after the Battle of Cassino, but having said that, a few tanks were still in the Light Mud and Blue/Black scheme in Trieste at the end of the War.

I hope that is of some help.

Cheers
David

David:
That's exactly the kind of info I'm looking for, very helpful, thank you. I will incorporate your suggestions in to the build.
While the two tone may not be totally appropriate, I really want to do it, especially since everything in my display case is overwhelmingly OD now.....
Thanks again!

First color coat, very lightly applied MM Modern Sand from a rattle can. I think (hope) that, with a few light gray washes after the second color is applied, it will darken up enough to look like what I want. Still to be added is some more in the way of stowage boxes, trays, etc. as per David's suggestions. I've done a little more digging as well, and it looks like a little more scratch-building is in order.

Hi Russell,
another option for images of Kiwi Shermans is Timeframes, this is part of the NZ National Library, and do a search for "Sherman". To view the images just click on "Online(Go)" and a new window will open, the images then can be enlarged, similar to Google earth.

cheers
