I am old school to the max. I have used Humbrol. Thinned down of course. Having said that Humbrol is out of business! Michaels sells an acrylic flat water based paint.

Humbrol is not out of business. Going quite strong though their paint doesn't brush quite like it used to.

You used to be able to get a great metal look from their silver. Not anymore.

I have a bunch of the acrylic craft paint I got for other projects and they are pretty versatile. They're replacing my dwindling stock of Polly scale.

Hi all, I've got a question concerning Vallejo (and probably all acrylics). I read in this thread that most people recommend them for hand-painting, and I agree it's excellent paint - I plan to switch to Vallejo and Citadel paints completely.

But : I use water and/or Vallejo's own thinner to thin it while handbrushing. Now, when I put the paint on a satin or glossy surface it doesn't really flow, but 'stands' on the surface in a little bulge, the water's surface tension at work. That of course makes it quite hard to paint exactly what you have in mind. Painting larger areas is equally difficult. When it's a matt surface it's not a problem.
How can I avoid this? Shake longer? Thin less? Use another thinner?

Try using alcohol as thinner, also if you are covering completely apply a matt varnish before. And give several, thin layers.

The best model paint for hand brushing, also as for spraying, from my point of view and long time experience is definitely Italeri Acrylic. You can dilute it with water and the surface will dry smooth and equably all over the complete surface. Diluting the delivered 20ml of paint you can easily have some 25-26ml of paint that still works perfectly with brush or airbrush.

I'll give it a try, thanks! I suppose you mean isopropyl alcohol? Won't the alcohol damage the previous layer(s)?

I tried vallejo with ethanol, not a good mix. Best handpainting experience for me, some life color, and privateer P3. P3 are fantasy paints, but some really cross over well (browns,greens...)

Bruce D,

Looks like your government is in the process of eliminating modelers. Your shipping rates and import duties are the worse along with a weak exchange rate. Looks like you may have to use crayons to paint with.
