I'm still a Combat Engineer with almost 30 years in the SC Army National Guard and an OIF-3 Veteran.
I was issued OD Fatigues during Basic in '81. I went through 3 versions of BDUs, deployed in '04 with DCUs and now wear ACUs.
The clothing allowance doesn't even come close!

Currently in my 23rd year of service. Like some here, I've seen multiple uniform changes and have done multiple jobs.
I've been a heavy construction equipment operator, combat engineer and am now in logistics.

Interesting poll - however I think your thread title and question may create a misleading result;
The thread title will lead mainly veterans and serving members to view and then vote - the current results imply a large majority are from the forces - however, having been a modeller for over 25 years, my personal experience is that many of us weren't, although I do know a number that were.
I ignored the thread initially because I'm not/wasn't in the forces, and thus it wasn't relevent to me to even look at it! seeing the current results made me think about it a bit more
just a thought!

Yeah I wondered about that. I opened the thread answered the poll because I was in the Army but my experience is that most modelers, in countries without compulsory military service, haven't served.
Interestingly I lost all interest in modelling when I started dealking with the real thing and only came back to it years later. I still regret the lost photo opportunities
Interestingly when I joined Armorama I thought it was just for Ex soldiers- hence my user name

It's hard to believe, but 35 years ago I was a lean, mean, fighting Marine. Now, I can't get one of my old web belts around my thigh, much less my waist..LOL! Man, those were the days.
Cheers,

To Rob , and others who have not served, I say this.....Although the poll just wanted to know how many modelers served or not, many of us that did serve are always proud to say so and so we posted our service branch and time. There are many ways to serve ones country other than military. Some ways are as simple as hard work at jobs that benifit the country such as construction , highways and things as simple as public transportation. If you work hard at whatever it is.....you contribute service to your country. Be proud. Happy modeling...... .......Al

I'm just kidding
I served 3 years in the Israeli defense force, actually I got out a month ago..I was a heavy load truck driver at first, after Cast Lead I moved to "MRAP" trucks in the West Bank and in my yearly reserve I'll be hauling tanks..great chance for Merkava photos.

I was stationed on the Golan Heights as a mechanic for 6 months at the U.N. camp, good times! Saturdays at the beach in Natanya, steaks at the Ranch House restaurant, swimming with the dolphins in Elat.
I agree, hauling tanks around would be a great oppertunity for photos!
cheers
