Help to produce a proper T-72. Anyone can add information. I will try to post updated information at the top of this thread to make a quick, one stop information source, but it will be kept intentionally focused as quick help. Detailed discussion will still remain in the thread itself. All contributions welcome.

Well the Tamiya kit isn't too bad, just has some shortcomings with it...which are very minor say vs the Skif T-64 and T-80 series LOL

A question has been asked as to what T-72's the Iraqi's currently use. Everything I have been able to find indicates that they are ex-Hungarian T-72M and -M1 tanks, but that they do not have the front glacis applique, as per the Tamiya kit. Any comments?

To be honest, the Tamiya T-72 is fine for what it represents...a E. German tank from a batch of 27. Polish manufacture - a T-72M1 hull and T-72M turret. If you build it as a E. German tank, it is accurate.

Anything else, it needs work.

Yes, that's true Jacques. I've already read it on an armorama post, one of your accurate review about that

Jacques

As I saw on the pictures on the net all irak new T-72 are T-72M versions with and without tucha system.

but I have to edit my comment see this on the wiki

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Iraqi_tanks_during_the_parade.jpg

seems to be a T-72M1 with a protection of M-113 on the commander cuppola

I know weve been down this road before concerning the T-72M1 Tamiya kit applique on the glacis and actual usage. You can indeed build an Iraqi T-72M1 from the Tamiya kit. Ive seen photos of at least 2 with this set up in Pat Stansell's T-72 book (Greenline Publications???). It was after OIF 1.

You have to change the turret, the iraqui tanks are T-72M1 and the tamiya kit is a rare version with T-72M1 hull and T-72M turret of the DR army so the problem is not the glacis but the turret

Just found this very helpful thread. Hope it`s still "alive"

I`d like to model a Cold War or just after that time, Russian Army T-72 A or AB , BM or other models from that time frame as shown in some of the walkarounds up thread and/or the Zaloga Osprey book on Cold War Tanks Central Front using the Tamiya T-72 kit.

While I don`t want to dump a ton of $$ into after market parts, what would I need for that ( miniarm, blast , SP Designs ?) or should I just try to detail the older DML A`s and EU`s kits ?

Thanks for any help !!

Well, for Russian army, there are 2 "easy" ways to get a accurate model:

Both involve using Tamiya's T-72 and Eduard's PE set for it.

1. Get SP Designs T-72 glacis and you have a T-72A early.

2. Get Miniarm's T-72A turret and you have a late T-72A.

If you want a specific look, like with ERA, then there will be more money involved. You can replicate the ERA either with a Miniarm turret and ERA, plus changes in the glacis plate, or by getting the Voyager/ET Model PE ERA sets and mounting them.

Jacques,

I guess this is the good place to ask this;

as this link mention (could be my two cents to his topic)

http://www.network54.com/Forum/47209/thread/1209626008/Overview+of+T-72A+models

Some of the late T-72 were fitted with add-on armour plate on the glacis, like M1's does. It appears that the main differences between those two versions are the kmt mount systems, anti radiation lining and extra stowage box on turret.

Now, could russia have herited of T-72 M1 hulls for a reason or another, and put back russian turret on those hulls? Therefore only needing a new turret, maybe some late type road wheel set and a PE set to make a "legit" russian T-72 ?

This was the set up I was having in mind for my T-72, if the result I get from restorating it are worth to put some extra money on it.

Thanks in advance!

Tom, what you are describing sort-of happened. My understanding is that the tank that Tamiya based their T-72 on was one of 27 tanks made for E. Germany by Poland. The manufacturer in Poland had the "new" T-72M1 hull but also had 27 T-72M turrets on hand, so they mated them together and shipped them out to E. Germany. The E. Germans used them until the reunification and then soon after retired them and sent them all to museums. This is why museum pieces can be a problem for modelers...

The T-72M turret is "roughly" equivalent to the Russian plain T-72 turret used up to the early T-72A and the T-72M1 hull is equivalent to the Russian T-72A hull, but the Tamiya one has the "late" feature of the added 16mm welded front glacis armor. BUT be careful as there are some detail differences within the sub-variants, like the additional front glacis armor etc...

If you take the Tamiya hull, add a T-72A turret (Miniarm etc...), and the Eduard PE set, since you just dropped a lot on the turret, you will get a Russian tank that was in service. It would be a T-72A (late). And even within this narrow sub-variant of tanks, there will be some differences in things like the front fenders.

Best advice, if you are concerned about accuracy, is to pick a picture and work from that.

Does anybody know which barrel the T-72A used? Lionmarc lists the L/48 and the L/48 D18K.

What options are there to build accurate T-72 Ural (object 172M)?
I am thinking of Tamiya kit + SP Designs glacis + Model Point Ural turret, but what about shelve edges and flipper armor panels? Is there anything helpful on the market or do I have to build them myself?

Skif did a T-64 with gill armor, perhaps that is usable on the T-72 as well. I think eduard also released an etch set with some included as well, again possible for a T-64.

And by 'shelve edges' I assume you are referring to the earlier style side skirts? As far as I know these arent available in any kit form. But on the real thing look very simplistic so cant be too hard to make.

I too intend to do an early T-72Ural soon, as a Libyan tank, utilizing the MP turret, Miniarm front hull, Tamiya kit and some elbow grease.

Hey!

Rob is right, Eduard offers the "flip out" panels for the T-64, but those damn puristic in design. (Edurad 35203, for T-64A)
The panel itself looks okay, (maybe a bit too flat) but the mounting arms should be replaced.

Here is a pic of my T-64 with those panels.

Hope this helps,

Andreas

Am I wrong ?
- Obiekt 172, Obiekt 172M, T-72 Ural : ModelPoint turret
- T-72A/M1 : Miniarm, Blast and JS-Model
- T-72M : Verlinden

Please, correct this if wrong.
