Thanks for the link, Marc. I took a look and didn't see anything specifically about that. It's a lot of information to sift through, though...

The Soviets developed add-on armor in construction bureaus and deployed them through offical channels. I remember a Tankomaster magazin article that illustrated different add-on armor designs and explained which soviet factory provided them.

So the usual add-on armor package would have been mounted by factories or rear echelon maintenace units, and painted according to soviet practice.

I was doing some researching on the T-34's and have some pointers on identifying the hulls from the three main factories. These are 1943 to late WWII types. Pictures off the web, for reference only:

The Factory 112 rear hull. Unique to 112 is the upper rear hull plate extends over the lower rear hull plate, and the large hinges that allow the top to pivot for access to the final drive and engine:



The Factory 174 rear hull. The hinges are similar to the 112 type, but the upper plate is shorter and inside the lower plate:



The Factory 183 rear hull. The hinges are much smaller, and the upper plate is shorter and inside the lower plate:



Some tanks had three small hinges, but might not be from 183. Several smaller factories made similar hulls:



And there are others. This tank is a WWII build, but rebuilt after the war. The turret is a Factory 112 type, and according to the owner he was informed by the Russians that the serial number makes it a WWII production Factory 183 hull:

Seems to me that's a Chekoslovaquian built chassis : look at the infantry button on the rear left.
Never seen on russian built T-34, to my knowledge.

True, not seen on a WWII chassis, but the tank was part of a rebuild program. Nothing was said about where the rebuild was done or by who.
