Well guys I finally got a digital SLR so I though I'd show everybody that I really do build models. Here's my latest, a Tamiya Jagdpanzer 38t with all the fixins, ready for paint. Not shown are the Friuls for it. I hope you like it.

Well, here's the result of my painting and masking test. It looks good to me but is much more labor intensive than I anticipated. This is using Vallejo Model Air. I didn't spray the little speckles, I'll save those for the model. So, what do you all think?

are you using circular stencils for the camo pattern? I've seen another model here that used the same pattern and did the speckles with masking tape. A very good looking paint job will really bring your model to life.

Looks really nice. I don't have near the patience to do something like that at this point, but it'll definitely make for a show stopper.

I used subtractive masking. I shot the brown, covered it with little adhesive dots, shot the green, placed the dots, and shot the yellow last.

Well the test shots look good, so looking forward to seeing the results on the model.

Looking good Matt -- and yes, it is labor intensive. I have initially thought of using adhesive dots. However, looking closely at the same painting guide, the circles itself don't seem to be uniformly round aside from having different sizes, so I settled for cutting masks using tape; same with the flecks itself. I placed the tape over wax paper (i.e. Cut Rite), so it gave me some working time during the cutting -- peeled it off and put it on the model. Not to hi-jack your thread, but here's pic to help visualize:

Cheers, and good luck on your project -- Tat

Paul - I'm using 6mm dots.
Tat - I'm not copying the Tamiya color profile, I just used it as a quick example. I'm basing mine on a series of photos in the BMM factory yard. The grouped dots should replicate the disc camo very well, or so I hope!
Yours looks like it's coming along splendidly, although there's a lot of work in creating these patterns!

OMG Gary and guys I'm so sorry! I rushed to finish the model for AMPS Internationals and totally forgot about this thread! I usually only have time to check the Painting forum and answer questions, and scan the Armor/AFV forum. I don't stop here often. So, to complete the chapters of the Jagdpanzer 38t -

The 6mm file coding dots from Staples proved to be way too large. After a 6 hour Google search, I found a place named www.tapecase.com that sells 3M adhesive dots in rolls of 2000 in a huge range of sizes. I enlarged my BMM photos to 1/35 scale and ordered 3mm and 4.5mm dots. After I shot each color, I placed dots with the tip of a #11 blade where that color should stay. At the end I cut tiny triangles out of .005 sheet styrene and shot the contrasting marks. Here's the look after paint:

Finished photos to follow soon!

Matt - Your paint job is awesome, but every time I see an involved camo scheme like this the same thought pops into my head: Was this really the best use of German wartime resources? Paint it green and get it into the field ...
