This is from Steve Zaloga's Sherman Vanguard book. It's a scene with a Polish unit. I'm asking about the truck. It doesn't seem to be a duce and a half.

Any info on it?

This is pretty tentative, since Brit softskins are not a major research item of mine, but it looks like a Scammel 6x4 heavy gun tractor or(can't tell if that's a crane or just something in the background)recovery vehicle.

The truck is the British Scammell Pioneer heavy breakdown (wrecker in the US). Accurate Armour do a 1/35 resin kit of it. This is the description from their site.

The Scammell Pioneer SV/2S Heavy Recovery Tractor was developed in the 1930's and was in service with the British Army from the late 1930's and throughout WW-II. Post war many continued in service until the 1970's with the last two vehicles finally retiring during the 1990's! This distinctive vehicle served in all British Army Theatres of operation. The German Army and Navy during WW-II also used Ex-BEF vehicles. This extensive 1/35th scale model by Brian Fawcett and Rob Tearle comes with full engine and transmission, bulged tyres, extensive stowage and etched brass detailing set. A comprehensive set of full colour decals is also included for BEF, Desert, Italy and NW Europe operation. Decals included are also available separately as DEK101

Add me as a third in favor of the looks of that truck.
It's amazing after all these decades of building stuff and looking at WWII photos, I've never seen one until now.
Sure would like Tammy or another major manufacturer to put one of those babies out in 1/35th, can always use another recovery vehicle

Amazing, less than three hours and I not only know what it is, but also who makes a model of it. You guys out OUTSTANDING. I'm never going to try to fool any of YOU.

Those tires sure look modern, don't they. Kind of like some monster truck they have now days.

I'm really thinking about concentrating on British vehicles, plenty of American stuff being made here, not to mention all the German things. I might have to add this one to my wish list. You know, the "wish I had the time list."

You guys might want to check out this site devoted to Scammell. Not a lot on the war-time versions, but the two clips of the post-war 6x6 Explorer being put through its paces is impressive

The vehicle in the picture is definitely the Pioneer recovery vehicle - the jib in the back of the R100 gun tractor is horizontal and only carries a chain-hoist for shells etc (7.2" howitzer)

The Scammel may be ugly, but where most WW2 trucks only survive in museums, these were still in service up to the '70s, and can be seen twoing fairground rides etc all over the UK today - most with the original engines ( or so I'm told)
