Hello guys and girls, I need a little help. A guy at my last scale model show asked me could I build a Syrian Tank. He didn't tell me what type. So it's up to me to try and build one for the next show/contest, in Spetember. So do any of you know just what type of moden tanks the Syrian army use to day.
Now I plan on building a Syrian Panzer IV but not right now. I think some type of Soviet T model. When I look up info on it get the same hits for the T-55 as I do for the T-56. I juse needone to start with. An now I have no idea of what comflict it would come from.
If any of you can come up with just one. That I'll have to add alot of detail to, than that will be the one I'll build.
Thanks guys.

Here are a couple of pics of Syrian T-72s. They also still have T-55 and 62s in their arsenal.

the tanks in Roy's first picture are of M-84s not T-72s.........
You can tell by the FCS and the crosswind mast.

And whats an M-84? Essentially a licence built T-72. But you are right. Although the pic says they are Syrian I wonder if those are not actually Kuwaiti M-84 flying the pendents of the coalition forces that fought to free Kuwait. If you look closely at some of the other pendents they are not syrian as that first one is. Syria doesn't field the M-84 so I doubt that that caption is correct. But Syria does have plenty of T-72s so going that route will be o.k. But now Caveman, your home work is really going to begin because now you have to find out exactly what version of the T-72 Syria is using and how to converst the Tamiya it to fit the need. I assume you will be using the Tamiya one as it is the only decent T-72 out there.

As pointed out, the first picture is of Kuwati M84s and the second one is of Iraqi T72s. Syria does not have that many T72s and they are very early model T72s. You would have to back date the Tamiya kit quite a bit. The main tank in numbers used by the Syriains is the T55 followed by the T62. The T55s are of various make and country of origin. The T62s are Model 67s and Model 72s.

OK how about I build a T-72 with a Slat armor kit.
Like the T-62.
I also read that an upgraded fire control system sent to syria from South Africa some years ago.
An how about this armor added to the tuuret.
A mix of these parts would make a really wild peace.

The T72S with the slat armor is Iranian. I really have a hard time believing the South Africans had anything to do with Syria since they were allies of Israel. The third picture is an Indian T90S. I would suggest you just build a stock T55 and do it in Syrian cammo and markings.

Thanks I didn't pay any attention to the flags in the background. Well I got the T72 so I'm going to build it mostly stock and paint it up in Syrian cammo and markings.
An upgraded T-72 by ATE South Africa features two conspicuous sights .... It was sold to Iraq and Syria:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-72_operators_and_variants
Is this fire control upgrade that South Africa supplied to Syria is what upset Israel and the USA. in the 1980s??

Ok, so you take a picture of a South African upgrade for the T72 from Wikiapedia (often a very poor source for information) and tie it in with someones opinion piece on events of the last few months in the Middle East and you have Syria and Iraq using this version. Right. Well that is how a lot of bogus information ends up on the internet.

Lok guys if any of you would take the time an see tha tI link a lot of detail. On my heavy armor peaces. You would understand that I'm trying to put together a really interesting looking project.
See theis hole want to build a Syrian tank came for a guy at my last show/contest. He and I were talking about some of my IDF ans US armor. When he asked what about building a Syrian tank. So keeping what he asked me in my mind. I thought it would be cool to build it in a wild and interesting way
What a suprise he will have at the next show, when he see the armor he asked me about. "Syrian that is". I just want there to be more stuff on the tank to make my tank stand out for all the rest.
Here are some of my more interesting projects:
M1 ABV still in progress.
Merkava Mk IIID.
KT-40 Soviet Flying Tank.
German Sd.Kfz 111 Munitionsschlepper.
I love to build the unexpected idea, it's what make guy the folks ask me when I walk through the door "So what wild thing did you bring this year"?
I love that!!
So Syrian tank with that FCS would make for a really cool project. Not a plain jan project. Thas boring for me.
So I'm sorry if my info is not right on., that's why I'm no here asking for info. Or posting what I find so that I can get the right help so my project with meat with realitatea.
Now do you have any info on a Syrian T-72 tank with any new add-on eqipment, that will help me achieve my goals?

Ok I was told that this tank was an Iraqi tank an that was right.
It's a Iraqi T-72 the flag image on the turret has three green stars with stylized Kufic script. The same color bands and Green stars with out the Kufic script, would make it a 1972, Syrian Arab Republic flag.
Here's some more sand colored Iraqi T-72s.
An this photo is of Iraqi armor as well.
So I'l going to have to keep my eye on the right styled Syrian flag. Imust say It's getting a bit hard to find clear photo of Syrian T-72s. Lots of photo are posted under the name Syrian T-72. An that's what's making it so hard to track down the right photo.
Syrian Flag imags and info.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Syria
So I now know what to look for when it comest to the flag. Red, white and black with two green stars. It looks as if I'm going to have to buy a book. The Net is letting me down.
So if any one has a book showing the syrian T-72M1 or what ever., please give me the name and where can I buy such a book.
Thanks you all.

"tankrou" aka Billy, that's just what I'm going to do. Build it modified with Photo-etch parts and partly stock from the box. I do know that I have to add some ERA armor.
Syrian Army attacking in Daraa on 24th April 2011:Youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIdiRpUWZ0U
This video is a little fuzzy but I can make out T-72 detail and ERA armor on the lower hull or side skirts.
I see that I can paint the full tank Olive Drab or OB with some type of light Brown camo blobs.
So thanks guys, Work will start real soon.
Ok "TonyDz". I can't edit any post once some one replys. So Tony the tankin the photo is a M-84AB version. Thanks man.
The M-84 is a 2nd generation main battle tank manufactured by the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The M-84 is in service in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kuwait, Slovenia and Serbia.
((The M-84 main battle tank is a Yugoslavian version of the Soviet T-72.)) It's easy to get the two confused.
Some changes from the T-72 include a domestic fire-control system, improved composite armor, and a 1000-hp engine. The M-84 entered service with the Yugoslav People's Army in 1984. The improved M-84A version entered service a few years later.
There were about 240 factories from ex-Yugoslavia which directly participated in production of the M-84 MBT plus about 1000 of them which participated indirectly.

Billy a resin conversion kit like "ppawlak1"-Paul P's Tamiya T-72 to Soviet T-72A Project. Now if I can't get my hands on any of those conversion kit's. I think I'll be scratchbuilding them. An if your thinking that would be hard for me. Look at these two scratchbuilt projects.

The Miniarm site: MINIARM Model Resin Kits
On this link page, you will see there full line of T-72s and T-90 turrets and hulls. After looking over there conversion kits for th hull. I can rebuild my front center hull and add that one handel grip to the right front fender. As for the turret I realy think I can reshap kits turret, to be a T-72A turret.
Now if I can reshape it I'll fully scratchbuild it. I don't know if the Syrian turrets have the anti-radiation layer.
T-72A Front hull.
T-72A Turret front and rear.

Sorry for the back to back replys but I need to add just a bit more. An I didn't want to post so much it would slow some of our forum member PCs down. :AF staff:
Guys I found this Syrian T-72 photo on a Syria - Iran Defence Forum. There are a lot of info on that forum.
Any way here's my marked hull, for cutting to start soon.
For now this is the end of the post. I only need info in this post. I'm going to do some work on it and start a new progress [post]. See you all there!
Oh and one more thing, in that youtube video. That a Syrian T-55 not a T-72. Sorry.
