Hi all
I'm doing a russian Willys Jeep using the Tamiya kit. Looking for references I've found a pair of interesting pics, but i'd like to have some explanations about one detail which I've noticed:
What was it for this sort of filter ? Do you have perhaps some closer pics of it?
The second question that I ask you is:
Where was the Willys canvas roof stored when it wasn't mounted on the car?
I've noticed that Tamiya kit has a piece that depicts a folded tarp. That piece has to be mounted under the passenger seat. Is it the canvas roof?
Thanks in advance for any reply
Cheers

Hey Mauro,
Bussy as always i see. Like your're project. Maybe want to build one to.
I think it's a jack to changes tires. By the late Ba 64 they ware also located on the same spot there.
Regards,
Remco

The top was folded and stored under the passenger seat.

No, this "strange unit" is not Willys's jack.
Original Willys jack is on picture below:
Some interesting Russian jeeps:
1) Interesting canvas top - on airfield:
2) Some sort of dinner in field conditions !
3) Three comrades (note the Horseshoe on jeep "nose"):
4) All American weapon - Willys and B-25 Mitchell bomber (Uman aerodrome, Ukraine):

it could be so Frenchy
I've never seen it on western Willys and I've never seen that "case" mounted on russian staff cars.
As you said actually it could be a sort of cockpit "stove". Many russian field modifications of Willys jeep were aimed to solve the "open cockpit" problem because driwing a "cabriolet" in Russian winter couldn't be so confortable
But I don't know what it is exactly.
It would be great to have some closer pic. Otherwise I'll have to choice an exemplar without this tool
cheers

Hey, Mauro!
If you look closely you will notice that on the picture #1 and pics #2 & 3 are different devices. They are attached differently too. #2 and #3 - obviously some kind of hydraulic jack. #1 - looks like a case for a German gas mask (probably was used for something else). Neither one was a standard equipment. And no way it is some kind of a field stove.
BTW, the picture of the jack Ed posted is an actual wheel jack supplied with Willys or Ford GPW (most likely there are GPWs on those pictures; actual lend-lease Willys was a rarity).

Thanks a million Alex!
It must be a German gas mask stovage indeed!
It would be nice to reproduce this field modification. Unfortunately i can't see how it is attached to the car.
Eventually I think I'll reproduce one of these exemplars (most likely the first one) :
I can easily see the insignas and it seems there are no "odd Russian stuff" mounted on them ....except the flowers...
Thanks again Alex. As usual you're kind and reliable
Cheers
Ps. Were the fuel tanks carried by Russian Willys, the same brought by the American jeep, weren't they?

Maybe I have understood what is it
Alex.
It shouldn't be a German gas stowage on the fender
In this site
http://www.ww2jeep.gportal.hu/gindex.php?pg=4483984
I've found this pic:
Caption said this is a fire extinguisher
Most likely is the second one depcted in this pic
cheers

Hey, Mauro!
Very interesting pictures, thanks! Especially the fire extinguisher! Never seen one like that.
But back to our question and your idea: I will not say anything, I will let you to compare the shape and dimensions. And I think I will stick with my idea

I orginially thought it looked like a Geramn gasmask canister as well. Interesting discussion, might get me to go back and see if I missed anything interesting in my on going research on lend lease GPA's.

I agree about the item in picture # looking like a German gas mask canister...But what about the one in the other pics ? Looks like it's easier to tell what it is not than what is is : it's not a jack, it's not a heater, it's not a surge tank, it's not a fire extinguisher, it's not a decontaminating apparatus...
