Darren Baker shares with us a walk around of the Scimitar CRV(T) currently on display at Bovington Tank Museum. This vehicle is a part of the new Afghanistan Exhibition at Bovington and displays some of the new measures taken to protect members of the military.

Not to put anyone off building this replica,
But it is actually a sabre under the bar screens and camouflage net and not a scimitar,
I think the museum is wishing no one would notice the difference.

I think you may very well be right on that one Frank? The turret looks like the thinner Fox turret fitted to the sabre.

Are you sure as the two vehicle share so much in common other than the turret height (asI understand it) I would be hard pushed to identify this as one or the other and so followed the info boards.

I have Had this argument on a few occasions in my recognition classes so i will do my best to clear it up for you.
The CVR (T) Sabre was intended for use by armoured infantry units and is fitted with the same turret as the old fox armoured car, this has a thinner profile and has a distinct ring that the turret sits on.
As seen here and in your pics.
The scimitar is used by cavalry units and has a much taller turret and dose not have the raised ring for the turret.
I hope that clears things up for you?

eg not remanufactured CVR(T) chassis' with a redundant Fox turret.
Vague recollections of a conversion kit to make this from a Scimitar/Scorpion base kit, but with a revised engine deck layout, anyone remember the kit mfr?

Not 100% sure on that Jon? I did serve with two former Scimitar drivers in my platoon, so scimitars were in use by armoured infantry battalions at one time? I am not clear on when the sabre was introduced and if they were older hulls mounted with new turrets? The whole CVR(T) fleet underwent a modernization program not so long ago and had a lot of revisions made to them such as a new diesel engine to replace the old Jaguar petrol engines, I think there was also upgrades made to the suspension on the vehicles? I am sure someone in armorama land can tell you better what they are??
There was a resin kit at one time to convert the AFV club kit but I think it is not in production anymore?

Thanks Frank that rings a bell now I knew it was something like that, I remeber now some units ahd a mix of scropion and scimeter.

My Refs for this are Terry Ganders' Modern British AFV's, & the paperback doesn't cover The Sabre.

I had a discussion recently with Bovington's Education Officer about amongst others the Afghanistan FOB display. He was quite open about the fact that the "Scimitar" was indeed a Sabre - that had been in the museum's collection for 20 years or so. The museum workshop added the slat armour and ECM spoiler, and replaced the chain gun with a GPMG. The vehicle certainly looks the part, but I wouldn't use it as reference.

I believe the boxes sticking up are part of an anti-IED system. Also seen on Warriors.

The first one gives the best indicator that it is a Sabre,
there is an added spacer ring between the turret and the hull.
