I say, we skip the nomination process for the first month and just give the prize to Sabot - he's gonna win it anyway! :-)

Hey Jim,
How about putting a "Medal of Honor" above the persons avater, and next to their rank, as a way to recogize them?

"We already have a winner."

"Don't foget..........."

Personally I don't think this is needed.

One reason I like this site is the easy going nature of the folks here, unlike some other sites I just read. This will become just like allot of model "shows". Guys will be posting just to win something and not to be a part of the modeling community here.

I also agree with the thought that time will sneak up on you and you'll become pressed to make a selection. Then keeping the winners prize updated each month will become a real pain. What's a fair way to select the "winner" will also be a problem. Then sooner or later you notice that the same people are standing out and being selected.

Sorry to rain on the parade but I would prefer to come to a site that wasn't a "competition" for modeler of the month. Now if you want to "feature" someone just have the Moderators do the selection. Sort of like what FSM does. I think this would be better. Some guys don't contribute allot but when they do it is significant and might not be as recognizable to most for the importance of the contribution.

Yes, and No. I think the unique atmosphere generated by the site will halp to overcome any such shortcomings. If it doesn't work than it can easily be scrapped or modified. Up until now however everyone seems gung-ho, and I think it is a positive initiative. It's good you expressed your reservations, but, it just goes to show how we can all think, discuss and speak freely, on the best all around armour site on the web.

You need to go back and check how many DIFFERENT people have posted out of how many are registered. I might just be the only one willing to rock the boat. The thing is a "unique atmosphere" can be killed real quick and be hard to retrieve.

it is not the high command, but the troops in the field that win the war

Steve,
I think your concerns are valid. I don't want this to be seen as a competition either. I was hoping that a $20 gift certificate would simply be a way to say thanks to those users who do spend a lot of their personal time helping out other modelers. In an effort to avoid some of the pitfalls you mentioned I think that limiting this to a "one-time" win is probably the best course of action. I certainly don't think Rob and Ken want to keep winning over-and-over.

That way we will encourage newer users to join in the fun and also keep the mood friendly as in the long run their will be many more users recognized.

How does that sound?

Jim,

I can't to tell you how to run your site. I must say I really feel comfortable posting here as opposed to some other sites. I'd just hope that the member of the month/quarter/year isn't a popularity contest but a significant contributor.

I can't speak for others but if I can help someone that's the reward. I especially like sharing the info I have. Books are great but try to find some of the info or photos that have been shared on just this site.

Guess you could do a poll to see how everyone would like to do it. Enough said.

I don't think a little thing like this has the power to turn everyone on the site to the dark side. There are alway going to be human nature in these types of things but I just don't see it turning into something where everyone decides to quite being nice and try and win the $20 gift certificate. I think if someone is trying to get the award it will stick out like a sore thumb and turn others off to voting for them. After a few poeple decided they liked the idea I posted why I thought of it in the first place and I think most poeple like the idea for the same reasons

Quoted Text

The main reason I got the idea was to recognise the poeple who help novice builders like myself so much. There isn't a lot that many of us can do to repay the experts for all they do and this just seems like a way to recognise them and thank them. We don't have to have any rewards, just thought it would be nice and another way to thank them. I also think it would be fun to learn more about these guys (or gals) and see more of their work.

I agree that there will be poeple trying to win and they may somehow cause some sort of trouble but I think the poeple who have been so involved in this site deserve a little more credit. I also believe that the positive things I mentioned above will far outway anything a bad apple can do to cause trouble.

I think most of us who have been posting, uploading pictures of models and photos of equipment, reviews and articles have not been doing it for any type of reward. I know I haven't expected any type of payment for the photos I've uploaded (got to be several hundred of them). I do it because I am in a position to take photos of whatever I want, whenever I want and I actually have a job where I have plenty of down time between scheduled courses. I wish I had the abilities with the digital camera when I was a young lieutenant or captain and could have taken pictures of the equipment during operations. Technology makes it easy for me to snap 40 shots, download the camera at night, and upload the shots to the photo gallery. I use rechargeable batteries so the only thing it costs me is time.

I hope I provide a useful service and I post on other sites advertising my gallery. The added benefit is that it helps bring new users to Armorama and since I enjoy a relatively good reputation on other boards, my posts do not get deleted or cause flame wars.

As far as people trying to "win" something, I agree. Whenever there is a contest, people will try to win if they are interested in the prize. Heck, I buy raffle tickets at shows and my IPMS meetings so I can win, but it is not my reason for attending. Same here. I may enter something if there is a contest, but it is not my reason for participating in this forum.

I find the general idea of tributing fellow armormaniacs good as I think it will do only good to the devotion to the site and the community. For me this has been a place to share my ignorance, experiences with my first models, trying out things and showing others how I work, how I understand this hobby. Every time I have posted something here was because of I was excited about something and wanted to share that. Cause I know I get excited myself about many works and discussions seen here at armorama...
I´ve been in enough competitions to be eager for more. For some of us that may be a little push to finish a project or write an article that everybody benefits from. In the end, it´s pretty much the same for me if we have competitions or not.
I just know that I wouldn´t have made my White Death article or take the pictures if there wasn´t some extra twist in it...(the spring contest) And I´m happy I got it done. I´m about to write a similar building story about it in Finnish Mallari magazine.

It´s very refreshing to have some criticism in here! Usually we spend most of the time praising each other´s work (which IS well deserved!)

I hope everyone has checked out my other thread on this topic. The actual nomination of users for this award. I appriciate everyone's input on this topic. I think this is going to work as I outlined on the new User of the Month page. We can always make changes as things occur down the road. I look forward to honoring our first award winner.

Cheers,
Jim

PS: Chris... How about: I reserve the right to bestow this award on anyone I think is being overlooked by the nominating process. ??
