Hello everyone, have a quick question, what would have been the the appropiate issue water can during Vietnam in the late 60's. Would it be the large mouth flip top cans?
Thanks

Those or the black plastic ones were both used. The plastic ones started getiing issued around `68. The metal ones you are talking about came out in WWII and were in use well into the late `70s. So either type are good.

we only had the metal ones, and cannot recall ever seeing a plastic water can. But we did use blivits when out on ops. The metal containers were most always pained O.D. with the letter "P" painted on it. Some folks painted "potable" and some painted "potable water." There were some clear plastic water containers that held about a gallon of water. These would have been collapsed when empty.

those cans look to be metal, and are non potable water cans. (military used both kinds of water). One of them looks like an oil can, as you can see dirt built up on the sides. From where they are pouring what ever it is in the engine compartment, I say it's not water, or transmission fluid. Maybe oil for the hydraulic system used with the gun launcher. Been awhile since I looked an M551 powerpack over.

Then you need to look real hard again, because they are the black plastic ones. They are not pouring anything from the plastic one on the Sheriden.

They both have the screw on caps of the plastic type, not the flip style of the metal type. While hard to see both have only 1 grab handle as opposed to the 3 the metal type have. They are both black, not O.D. as most of the metal ones where. You might have a hard time identifying the plastic ones if you have never seen them. Dirt gets on everything, if it is trapped by oil it is darker than normal, on the water can it is not.

not going to argue about it, but the can setting on the ground has a dent in it. The one they have ontop the tank maybe plastic, and maybe not; I don't know. But it looks O.D. green to me.
