I've seen it attach to Sherman tow shackle mounts, but the hellcat looks a lot wider for that - OR did the hedgecutters come in different widths????

Thanks for any tips on attaching this

looking at it again and I guess it does go out to the tow shackles - still curious about the overall width of the blade then?

Howdy Greg ..those hedge cutters were made from what ever was at hand ..mostly anti tank obstacles,,the big nasty steel ones and they made them to fit what ever they were making it for ..they weren't kits most of the time and this i am guessing here but i think since the Sherman was so common thats why there so easily made ..one plan cause all Shermans are the same at the end of the day but the Hellcat is a different matter ..custom made matey ,,thats the only way you can go i think

Now to the mounting ..I would say they just welded some steel section straight to the front armour and welded the cutter to that ..after looking at my AFV Club one i would say thats the only way it could be done .

You have to use the good Duct tape not the Walmart stuff.

On a modeling note, they probably didn't paint them so it could lead to some interesting weathering with ocean rusted bare metal, covered in dirt and chunks of turf..

Another issue would you really want to lead a charge through a hedgerow in something as thin skinned as a Hellcat? Just a thought.

Never been seen and bloody unlikely...

I'd love to be proved wrong though...

On the attached forum discussion one of the members mentions Concord Publications Company Armor at War Series 7005 "US Tank Destroyers in Combat 1944-1945" by Steven J. Zaloga has pictures of the M18 with a Cullins device attached.. I can't confirm this since I don't have the book.

If anyone has this book how about letting us know if this is true...and if so... what page it's on. Thanks...

A cullin is the same as a Rhino? Here's a lot of pics of M18s and a few with the hedgecutter on front.

Thanks! In cases like this I love to be proved wrong!

What model are you using for the Hellcat?

According to Zaloga, in the captions of the photo, yes, it's a Cullin...

Hello Jim, I'm using a 1/48 Kengi Hellcat ($40 resin kit). I have a 50 cal and a couple of figures for it. I still need to add the light guards and antennae., and of course, the cutter I have a build log going in the 1/48 section. I never knew these things had the hedgecutter either as I thought they came to the ETO later, but I was surprised also. There's a nice Discovery channel video on Youtube.com with the Allacourt battle with them in it.

I finished my build! I made my Hedgecutter with Plastistruct 'I' beams and strips and made some headlight protecters. The only thing I'm worried about is the resin barrel warping/bending, so I'm ordering a metal replacement from Gasoline ($3). Glad I didn't spend much time on painting the interior as I just primed this and forgot to cover the hole - Doh!
