Dear friends,

I have heard not so good review about the Tamiya T-72. I know Revell used to make T-72 with ERA and that commander armor plate.

I really like the ERA with that commander armor plate, where can I buy one decent (fairly accurate kit) or can anyone point me how to get it converted.

I am new to T-72, for that matter..new to all cold war russian armor

Cheers

I believe http://www.hobbyeasy.com carries a couple of conversions for the T-72.

Well Tamiya kit actually is good, for sure the best t-72 which you can have. It has some problem on a fender and it depicts a rare eastern German version, but you can use Miniarm conversions to obtain a russian exemplar.

Is the Revell (Zvezda, DML) kit which is TOTALLY wrong

anyway look at the miniarm site for conversion of tamiya kit

http://miniarm.com/index.php?menu=afv-t72

Personally I'll wait for a new T-72 tool

There is no perfect T-72 kit on the market, Tamiya is "not so good" as you said, but is still the best of the bunch, at least it is dimmensionally accurate, (Revell and Zvezda offerings are re-boxed Dragon old kits, very unaccurate as they were made using only photographs as reference and no actual measures). The turret shape is a bit off (for a T-72, totally wrong for a T-72A) and some upper hull details are wrong (again, wrong for a T-72, accurate for a T-72A).. Somebody correct me if I said the wrong T-72 variant names. If you want a T-72BV (w/ ERA), Miniarm has two conversion sets, one for the hull and one for the turret, these sets were designed to use with Tamiya's T-72. Best regards.

José.

Hello,
Miniarm kits are good, but take into account that they cost a lot of money and require a lot of experience to build. https://armorama.kitmaker.net/forums/156767 This build is a good exaple of what can You actually archieve. Still, Miniarm is my favourite brand.

Kiong
, if you can get the dragon, zvesda, revell T72 era, for cheap, go for it, do some surfing here on armorama on T72 subject posts, and if you got some Q's just post 'm and there is always someone who has "a" answer.

you can go nuts on scratching the details, or buy loads of Expensive aftermarket, to fix the problems, or you can settle with,
"it's russian, it's got eraé blocks on it, and I've build it to my best skills",
so hope to see a build post, or some Q's here soon from you.

have fun, build what you like, how you like it,
anyways you'll have a T72 and probably will have learned some more details on this Beast of Russian warfare

Hi guys.

Thanks for your replies and tips.

a) So the ERA and fragment shield only applies to T-72 B and T-72M?

b) Is trumpeter releasing a new T-72? I thought I saw it somewhere in the Oct Japan hobby show report...

Cheers

I think that was their upcoming T-64. I remember seeing the "gill" armor on it.

Me, I'm fine with my HobbyCraft T-72 "Iraqi" kit (copy of a copy of a Tamiya T-72 kit). Though I wouldn't mind something more accurate.

A) No. There are several versions which can carry the kontakt brick defense armour system
Look here for some rough explications

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-72_operators_and_variants

B) We REALLY HOPE SO.... but I think we should still wait .
Anyway Zvezda has anounced a T-90 kit. T-90 has been derived from T-72, so Zvezda could release a NEW T-72 KIT! (I wish I was) Otherwise we will managed to obtain a T-72 modifying the new Zvezda kit (quite difficult but....)
Trumpeter some time ago produced a T-72 kit which was a rough copy of theTamiya kit. As far as I know is quite hard to find now, but it could be a cheaper alternative to the Tamiya kit

Hi guys,

Thanks for the inputs, Mauro, thanks for clarifying the T-72...

Looks like unless I spend $ on Miriam, there is no way I can get a accurate T-72...For a moment I was hoping trumpeter may the solution..Well, looks like its going to be a T-72 drought for me unless I settle for the OOB Tamiya or the up and coming T-90.

Cheers

There is one more option for You. The t-72AV http://southsudannet.activeboard.com/forum.spark?forumID=27948&p=3&topicID=21084397 some pictures here. It might require some surgery, but if You are not aiming for a completely accurate kit You can just attach Voyager or Miniarm ERA blocks to the model, and replicate the anti-rad layer with putty and a Voyager PE set. You have to get rid of the add-on armor on the hull front, though. I ask the purists here what else is needed for a rough conversion.

Hi guys,

Let's say I use a cheaper option like this, converting T-72M2 out of the Tamiya T-72.

a) Say I choose to use the AEF Design turret-

http://www.hobbyeasy.com/en/data/33761.html

Which front glacis correction do I use to match this turret? Do I use this glacis from SP design?

b) http://www.hobbyeasy.com/en/data/ueprjasmcaba6zayea4p.html

c) Can I add the fragment shield?
http://www.hobbyeasy.com/en/data/t8bgi4mnnepkospfnxrj.html

d) and ERA blocks?
http://www.hobbyeasy.com/en/data/jhqbqxpjgl7w74cwlwp2.htm

Thanks for the patience guys. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Cheers

I know, google translator is not the best to understand a text written in a foreign language, but anyway, you can find the best references about the t-72 versions, in Russian sites

Try here

http://army.lv/ru/t-72/631/17#info

On the left you can also find lots of drawing and over 1000 pics

More of them there is a t-72 book in pdf format

HI Mauro,

Thanks so much for the help, the book is great! I will get it translated to English soon...I think the plan and top view of the T-72 plans will help me greatly in modelling this tank...esp to compare the turret and position of the misc. equipment.

Glad to have helped you
As you've seen, recognizing Russian tank versions is ALWAYS a HUGE MESS

Anyway, if you need some links about walkarounds let me know

Cheers
