I am preparing to create a vignette using a small wooden decoupage plaque. I have stained and sealed the base and am debating the best way to create the road base my kubelwagen will sit on. I was planning on using paper machie, but, will this bond to the wooden base? Do I need to glue a piece of styrofoam first? Any suggestions, or links to a "how to"?
I have created a diorama before using a picture frame, but never a vignette in which the road base will sit above the frame. thanks for the help.

You can use papier mache and it will stick to your base w/o lifting if you add white glue. Dependng on your vignette idea, I personally would use sculpt-a-mold; which you can get pretty cheaply at any Micheals, hobby lobby etc.

Shep Paine used Celluclay if I am not mistaken, and I think it worked okay for him? you could try that, or paper mache, or even DAP drywall paste in a can.

Yes, Celluclay is what I used for my last diorama and it turned out reaaly well. I will try adding white glue directly to the base.

i have used celluclay way back in the early 90's and i would like to suggest roughing up the area where the groundwork will be done with some coarse sandpaper as the celluclay will prefer this to a slick varnished wood surface.

I have used vinyl concrete patch and it worked great. Light weight and already has texture in it! Dries pretty much over night and cleans up with water. You can find it at any of the big box DIY stores and some Walmart/Kmart stores in the hardware section.

Tyler,
Let me suggest an alternative to Celluclay. DAS Air Dry Clay, available at Michaels. Here's why: It won't shrink.
I've found that Celluclay will shrink at it dries. This will tend to pull the edges up on the base and cause it to warp. Check out this related thread from last week and I explain how to use DAS. I find this superior to Celluclay.

Thanks for all the great suggestions.
You are right about the Celluclay. The edges on my diorama have shrunk and curled up. I had to do some touch up painting. I will try one of these new suggestions.
