I'm starting a new dio and was just asking for some input,opinions, and ideas from anyone. I'm doing it on a 2.5 x 1.5 meter table. I can use less of the table or connect another table to make more room for it. I'm using 1/35 models and figures.
This is the idea:
A ruined,bombed-out, nothern France city with a cobblestone road running through it. The road will turn into a dirt road after it's out of the town, and that dirt road will lead to a bridge going over a creek or river. There will be a crossfire between US and German troops going on in the city. There will be a panzer, a halftrack, and a armored car for the germans. There will be a sherman, an m-18, and a jeep for the US. I'm not sure whether to have the rest of the table a forest with more troops and armor (German or American) coming to the town to help, to make the practicly whole table into a bombed out town, or a to use the rest of the table to have a makeshift US army command post or base.
Any Ideas??

I have noticed in a lot of dios (limited by size) that there is is only one of everything. 1 tank, 1 armoured car, 1 jeep etc. and you are deciding to do the same. Why not have a few of the same item as in part of the same regiment or something with a command vehicle or support vehicles etc. What about a convoy coming into the town and a few allied vehicles/troops laying in ambush. I have been thinking about this quite a bit but I am afraid to build something that big. My wife wouldnt mind but my 1 year old daughter would find it very interesting. And by the sounds of things, size is not one of your restrictions. Just my thoughts on this. /Frank

Great idea! I never thought of that. I could get some german trucks and more panzers and have them coming across the bridge and some on the dirt road on the way to the city. Then I could have the US troops and armor waiting in the bombed-out city for the surprise attack. I'll consider it. :-)

What german armor should I get next? I'mm looking for something to be on a convoy awaiting an American ambush.

- opel blitz or other cargo truck or troop carrier
- some sort of halftrack (maybe with flak gun)
- some kind of motorcyle with accompaning troops
- another pazer tank type
- armored car

Very close to the front, I'd rather imagine them moving in some sdkfz251 halftracks, or by foot,
well dispersed. Also, the troops would be rather alert and there wouldn't be any troop riding
casualy on the back of a tank.
Further behind the lines, where they don't feel so much in danger, a few opel blitz would be great,
with some troops chatting nicely in their backs. Still, some would be looking up, to spot allied
fighter bombers. A motorcycle could be opening the road, and one or two armored cars could be
scattered through the convoy.
But well, that's well that's my imagination... what does yours tell us ?

keep it compacted and tight.so the viewers eye takes in the story you are telling,the ambush
sounds good,dont make it so large that you cant tranport it safely,if you make a good job of it,your going to want to show it.All the best

If I were u, I would ambush the Germans...and for reality it would be much more accurate....
after normandy the germans does not have such a chance to send a convoy in daylight.... or gather such a big convoy....
I would prefer a 88mm flak or two in the middle of bombed town, with 1 king tigers and a couple of panthers and jagdpanthers waiting for the allied convoy.... U can have some motorcyles and kubel/schwim wagens as German commanders.....
For the allied convoy you should have a couple of GMC trucks, a convoy leader machine gunned jeep, perhaps a m-20 armoured car as recon vehicle, and a couple of m-10s escorting the convoy.....
I would like to see the photo when u finish.....

I haven't really decided on the secnario yet. I'm still in the process of making the models. I'll go check out some sites and books I have to get an idea of what would make sense in the scene I'm going for.

I have thought about this idea for a while now and I have come to the conclusion of what I want. I was thinking of a collection of worn soldiers returning to a bombed out city with some casualties and some guys who were sitting around waiting on them. Maybe more of an infantry style, weary convoy. Some mercedez benz or opel blitz trucks, a few motorbikes/side cars, Maybe even a horse drawn unit of some kind. But nothing certain yet. Maybe you could go for this, but have the americans waiting on them. At the end of the day its your dio, so take what you want from these posts. /Frank

What an ambitious undertaking...I salute you! :-) As I read the ideas flowing in this thread, I was wondering if a few (since it is a large dio) AT positions might not also be included. I recently finished a Tamiya PAK 40/46, and I believe there is a 3.7 available as well. They might look good protecting the bridge crossing. Good luck on the project. Can't wait to see pics of this one...

I been pounding on a smaller version of this idea. Mine is a bombed out German town, with a T34 drove just around a street corner, then "BANG" hit by the Marder III, then Grenadiers from a 251 rushed forward to finish odd the crew of the T34. Hell, I even got a name for it now "Close Encounter of the Unkind"....
Now all I need to do is wait for my figure painting skills to improve so I can take on this ittle project.

Dont worry too much about the eyes. At that scale you dont even see them. Mark Bannerman has a good technique on Missing links that I have (half) followed and it works OK. Not perfected it yet but you gotta start somewhere. You cant expect to do figures like that first time

You know you could do something like the last battle in Saving Private Ryan where the Germans are ambushed there.Have like a Tiger or a Panzer column going through the village and the front one gets popped,then the rear,a standard ambush tactic.If you want to really make it interseting you could throw some other stuff in there like a Sdkfz 139 Marder and have the crew blown all to hell.Just a idea I came up with looking at yalls posts. #:-)
A really good way to get some more ideas like those is look for like interviews of some vets on the net about thier battles they were in.

Oh yeah I almost forgot........Warrior Scale Models has a US sniper in about the 44-45 era in France.I dont know if its exactly what you are looking for but is the only American sniper for WWII that I know of.
