Hey guys, the White numbers "02" on the box at the rear of this tank looks just like Woodlands Scenics rub ons, but they're too small.
http://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/Item/MG727/page/1

They should be around 11mm high, plus or minus 0.5mm.(Around 7/16 inches?) Anyone knows of such available?

Anyhow Echelon has something similar which could be tweaked.. Anyone knows the height of these?
http://pachome1.pacific.net.sg/~kriegsketten/D356062.htm

Thanks!

Before you go and order any that look "close enough" check out the model train section of a hobby shop. Lots of rub on letters and numbers there. Also check some places like Office Max etc. I've found a lot of the larger generic transfers in those types of stores.

Thanks Gray, I'm just hoping to do things online and to my door rather than go hunting, I'm in Singapore so there's one place I figure may have it...

Hi Nick,
there was a thread about this last year https://armorama.kitmaker.net/forums/175091

I don´t have this book/pics but be careful, the right spelling in German is "GOTT MIT UNS" (it means god with us) but maybe the tank-crew did a mistake then you have do do the same

Cheers
Walter

Hi Walter,

Yes I saw that thread as well as the one on militarymodelling, unfortunately the 02 markings are not close enough to the real thing.

My mistake on the spelling of Gott Mit Uns, the decals from dragon's kit is correct though.

I've emailed Echelon and waiting a reply on the height.

Well, using Echelon's decals aren't an option as Lawrence said they were around 7mm in height.

If I get some time, I'd search the stores for "rub ons", or if I could find the appropriate stickers I could use them as a reversed mask instead, by spraying on white, masking then spraying the background color.

Wish me luck...

I had a go at this tank and asked the same question. A member of this forum got back to me ( pzcreations ) . I think he got info off Mig . Maybe try to get hold of him via another web site .
Can post pics of mine if you like , but I think I left out part of the marking.
Good luck....

Here is my attempt....

The stowage box I scratch built , the extra wheels I took from other Dragon M1A1 and A2 kits , you need alot ! Eduard razor wire , I took the flash surpressor ( I think ) for the .50cal from a Verlinden set and the other stowage is Real model stuff and accurate armour water bottles.
You also need the extra lights which are taken off a M113 I believe , might be wrong though.
Hope this helps.

Hi John,

Thanks for the photos. Good Work!

I completed the scratch work for the stowage boxes..I'm sure you know not an easy task. I got my lights from spares off an IDF M113.
Yeah the multiple spare wheels are a pain..

Did you wrap those water bottles in kitchen wrap?

How did you do those numbers?

Anybody knows....

How the heck the concertina wire is attached to the side? Seems like a metal hook going up in the left pic. And like multiple metal bars in the right pic...?

Is that a picket on the turret's side bin..?

Looks like a bolted on piece of metal like the kind used for temporary fencing. I have seen tanks with these welded on the rear end, but never on the sides. As for whats on the sponson box top looks like a pipe or tube or maybe a tubular handle. If you can get some bigger photos PM me and I can venture a guess, unless Gino or Mike Mummy or one of the other modern specialists can figure it out first. Cheers.

Nick,
I am not may not be as knowledgeable as Mike or as prolific a poster as Gino but I have been around tanks a bit and here is what I will offer.

I have seen hooks, made from concrete reinforcing bar AKA rebar hanging from the back deck lifting eyes as well as lengths of pickets bolted to the grill doors used to hang concertina on tanks. I have not seen concertina hung from the side skirt as shown but it could be done easily with a 1 meter section of rebar, bent into an "S" shape and with one end hung on the top of a skirt and the concertina wire hung on the other end. Hanging the wire on the side of the tank makes sense as the crew would not have to be in the path of the exhaust to remove the concertina for use in a road block.

As for the turret bin, a piece of pipe or perhaps a section of picket, with slots cut into it, are sometimes used as an anti-theft device to keep the turret bin latches from being kicked open, as the lid, handles and latches are made of aluminum. The pipe/picket would keep the handles locked and spread out the force of the kick or blow.

Just my $.02 in USD

Thank you Damon and John, Sorry for the late reply.

The metal that's used to secure the concertina wire looks weird like 2 sets of 3 parallel bars.
I will see how I can incorporate your info into my build. And will post photos once the tank is done.

Cheers
Nick

Angry Dog,

Dig the paint job and the weathering. How did you get the look of the dust sticking to the camo lines. I have seen actually vehicles like that but not sure of the process to get that effect. Please explain. Thanks

Thank you Joe,

About the paint build up at the edges..I think someone explained his method in this forum but I can't recall who.

You could use masking tape for the camo and spray a little more on the edge thus having the paint build up a little thicker there. Then using Vallejo gloss coat with a thin brush to paint along the edge, while the gloss is still wet and quickly dab sand colored pigments. Once dry remove the excess with a cotton bud damp with windex (ammonia)
For pics see my old blog or picasa album on an AAV. I used it for dust streaking effects but it'll work just the same.

Hi guys! Long time since I've been here..
I have 3 questions if anyone can help :
1)What's that black rectangular thingy behind the crew hatches and besides the right antenna? Looks like some make shift shield?
2)What's that funky Blue, green, yellow and white box on the turret?
3) What would crew usually store in the spare road wheel when mounted as such?

THANKS A ZILLION!!!

Well - first the disclaimer that I've never been in an armor unit or in a tank that wasn't on display - but if I had to guess at the blue and yellow thing, I'd say it was a box of Kleenex (facial tissues).

The box behind the loaders station looks from my perspective to be a wooden ammo crate of some sort, maybe a mortar. Tank crews tend to be pack rats and scroungers, and we accumulate items to suit our needs. I used to call it creative procurement or something like that. The other box, could be a Kleenex box, but I cannot imagine why or an older box of some sorts to catch brass or links and make clean up easier.

Nick,
I woiuld guess the following items:
1) Looks to me to be an exhaust deflector that was thrown up on the back of the turret. Other pictures in the book might confirm or deny this...
2) No idea
3) Looks ot me that there are slave cables coiled up inside of the roadwheel. The upturned roadwheels are kinda a catchall for tanker. I have seen kevlar helmets, web gear, water bottles, MREs, ammunition cans, etcpiled in there. A closer examination of the "Gott Mit Us" pictures shows a rope (with a grappling hook ot clear wire/explosive obstacles) wrapped around the SGL and what appears to be rope or cables poking out of the roadwheel.

HTH

Thanks Everyone for the input.
I'll be adding the cables to the spare wheel. As I've already coiled slave cables around the SGL.
My customer doesn't want the tissue box-but at least that mystery is finally solved!if I ever build another.

The most annoying thing is that after further scrutiny of my pdf pics - it seems that it's not an exhaust deflector on the blow out panels..as it's a solid rectangle. And it's dimensions and structure is much shorter and slimmer than any type of ammo crate I could google!
And it's also almost black instead of a light wood color. it's uncertain stuff like this that drives me nuts!!!
Unless someone can suggest otherwise..I'll have to just build a box to simulate it.
