I was wondering if anybody new the unit for the decals that go with this kit.(3-3AD5) I'm making this straight out of the box and adding a figure but i need to know what unit patch goes with it (if any) and also is this U.S. Army our Marines?

The '3AD' would most likely be 3rd Armored Division. If that assumption is correct it would be Army.

The bumper markings are for 3rd BN, 5th ADA assigned to the 3rd Armored Division.

The above statements are correct. The markings are left over from their earlier M998 Cargo HMMWV with canvas which was from Operation Desert Storm (ODS, '90-'91). They are not correct for a vehicle in Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF, '03-'11)

You can use some leftover USMC markings as well...

As Frenchy shows above, and you can see below, it was mainly the USMC who used this type of armor on HMMWVs.

Some more info on the Academy kit. The lower portion armor is standard Armor Survivability Kit (ASK) plates and the doors and rear upper panels are a kit first used by the USMC known as Explosive Resistant Coating (ERC).

And another USMC pic with the ERC panels.

Hey guys,

I read somewhere that the 82nd Airborne used these M998 gun-trucks in Iraq during the early days. Did any other US Army units use the M998 gun-truck (like the Academy kit model)? I have only seen USMC units using them.

I ask becuase I plan on building another M998 IED gun-truck alongside Academy's M113A3 (Iraq '03).

2nd ACR may have had a few, probably with the mortar platoons, RSS, and 84th engineers.

I know that when they deployed, they had the M1025's as opposed to the uparmored M1114's. In fact I read a news story about the regiment in Sadr City, and some of the captured insurgents said that they learned not to shoot at the "green trucks" because they shoot back.
