Hi guys,

With June 6th coming up, would anyone be interested in a d-Day armor campaign!

I'm thinking about wading Sherman's, DD's, crabs, centaurs, funnies, etc. just about everything that's the Allies used to storm the beaches would qualify.

Let me know what you think.

Tanks!

Hi Dave,

That could be fun, have you got a time period in mind (start/finish) etc?

Cheers

I have a Italeri Marine Sherman that would fit into this Campaign perfectly, BUT ...

... it must start NEXT year for I have way too much on my plate right now.

Sorry.

Hi guys,

I was thinking September 1st 2012 till June 6th 2013, two significant dates, but I'm open for anything.

What do you think?

Would love to make a Sherman DD or a crab, but wouldn't know how to start, so I'll probably do a centaur with wading gear.

Alan, just saw your pm, seems we had the same end date in mind. :-)

I was first thinking of starting on June 6th, I have what I need in my stash, but I was thinking June 6th could be a bit too soon for other people?

But it's fine by me...

What do you think, would June 6th 2012 till June 6th 2013 be feasible?

Thanks!

Okay, I could do a June 6th to June 6th Campaign. But I doubt you will get it all together before this Wednesday.

Unless it's 2013 to 2014?

Hi guys,

This is the first time I'm doing something like this, so if I make a mistake somewhere, or I'm doing something wrong, let me know!

Ok, the rules:

The Rules and Regs
1. Any armored vehicle, Allied or Axis, that was in action between the Caen - Cherbourg road and the coast between June 6th and June 9th 1944 in any scale will qualify. Any vehicle used to storm the beaches - ex. LCVP, LCM, DUKW - or diorama of the D-Day landings will also be allowed.

2. Markings must be of any of the divisions - US, British, Canadian or German - present at the aforementioned time frame. Wading gear isn't mandatory, but strongly encouraged. The same goes for the Sherman DD, Sherman Crab, Churchill AVRE and other "Funnies" of the 79th Armored Division.

3. If the unit of the model you're building was in Normandy at the time, and it's been know that this unit was equipped with the model you're building, it's assumed that the model you're building qualifies. The model must however have the decals of the qualifying unit.

4. The model must be armored, so no jeeps and trucks or other soft skins.

5. No what ifs. You must be able to document - by quoted text or photos - that the model you're building was present in Normandy between June 6th and June 9th 1944. Research is part of modelling.

6. Models can’t be started before the start date.

7. You must upload at least one photo of the kit box and contents to the campaign thread, so we know what you are going to build.

8. You must upload at least 2 Work in Progress photos to the campaign thread. More photos are strongly encouraged.

9. You must upload at least one photo to the campaign gallery of the completed model.

10. Model is only allowed in one campaign.

@Steph, I would limit it to June 9th, so D +3, this sorts of marks the end of the invasion and the build up of the bridgehead.

@Gary, if you can model it as a Sherman that was in Normandy before June 9th, and you can document it, it would qualify.

@Jeff, I can try, can't I. :-)

@Mike, your AVRE would qualify, since wading gear was dropped before June 9th.

Ok, what do I do next? Submit it as a campaign? Or is there anything else to do?

I think this could be a real fun campaign with as outcome a bunch of historical models.

Thanks!

Dave

Edit: Tweaked the rules a bit.

Ok just read the campaign guidelines. Seems we need at least 10 members signing up.

So help me out here, and submit that you would be willing to participate.

Second, it seems we need a ribbon, is there someone who could create this? I was thinking about something with the colors of SHAEF and a Sherman DD in front.... Other suggestions are welcome of course.

So, let's get this thing started. :-)

The 2nd arrived in Normandy on June 9th, so you're lucky ;-)

Yes, it would qualify. I would encourage to find a picture of the actual tank and model it as close to it as possible. Would be great to have a lot of historical models in this campaign.

I would love to see a lot of wading gear, carbs, AVRE's and the lot, but regular afv's from the 2nd US armoured division and The 7th British armoured division are allowed. And of course all the different independent tank battalions.

Gary,

Hurricane was one of the first tanks ashore, so it definitely qualifies.

There's an excellent shot of Hurricane in Steve Zaloga's book "The M4 Sherman at War" from the Concord Armor at War Series #7001.

Unfortunately I don't have the book, but maybe somebody else here does.

So, I guess, you're in, so am I, which means 8 to go! :-)

Go, and spread the word. :-)

Hello Dave,
I have 4 books in front of me showing that some of the 21st Panzer and the Panzer Lehr was in action by June 9th.

So is German Armour allowed in the campaign?
If so, I am in,
Cheers,
Bruce

Hey Bruce,

I was actually thinking the same thing tonight, why not let German armor in. :-)

As long you can document that the afv you're modelling was In action between the Caen - Cherbourg road and the coast between June 6th and June 9th 1944 it's ok.

Hey, it would be kind of boring if all those landed afv's had nothing to fight against. :-) and I never said allied dday armor. :-)

So, the main qualifier will be Caen - Cherbourg road and the coast between June 6th and June 9th 1944.

But I do hope some guys will be building stuff that actually landed on the beaches with a lot of wading gear and other fun stuff. :-)

I guess 4 to go. ;-)

Dave

Dave,

Great concept, Count me in. A great excuse to tackle a Churchill AVRE. I'm looking at a picture of a A.V.R.E. named Cheetah on Sword Beach (with an M10 in the background). This is from "Cracking Hitler's Atlantic Wall' by Richard C. Anderson Jr. "Cheetah" would be my subject. Here is the pic (the M10 is cropped out):
