Jeff,

Robs right of course, there were no M4A3s in Normandy at that time, so your up to a serious modification, kit bashing or just choose another subject. :-)

But you have plenty of time to decide. :-)

Dave

Oh my for a minute there I thought I was signing up for a fun Campaign, not a serious modeling contest. I know all about what Shermans were used and was going to leave off the supplemental armor. Hopefully the glacis angle was not going to be an issue but apparently it is.

Just hope everyone knows it's going to be a Rivet Counter Campaign! I can play too.

Engine deck is completely different too...

I've got the Tamiya Cromwell, but I don't think any Type C hulls made it over. If I'm wrong, I might possibly be able to enter this one.

Hey Phil,

There were more then enough fireflies in Normandy, the question is, did one land before June 9th. ;-)

I think so, I think the 27th and 8th TB had some on land by June 9th....

Let's try to find a picture. :-) I'll help you out.

hello, the 4th armored brigade that landed in Normandy between 7 and 10 June uses sherman II and sherman firefly VC

DUH! What a revelation! I do know the difference between the M4 and the M4A3 ... and other Shermans. You're somewhat new here so I'll go easy on you. With the wading stacks in place I bet you couldn't tell what engine deck it had, huh?

That was my plan. Maybe I'll scratch build some stacks for my Cromwell, because we all know you guys can identify the M4's from what the A27M had. Right?

Oh this is gonna be fun AND educational ... for some.

It has markings for the 9th Panzer-grenadier regiment, Normandy 1944. I have done some research and have found that Grille were in Normandy on D-day
So if the campaign is approved this will be my build

Hi folks,

7th Armd Div landed on 7th June.

11th Armd Div landed on 13th & 14th June.

79th Armd Div landed om 6th June.

32nd Guards Brigade landed on 22nd June (original landings on 16th June postponed due to bad weather).

4th Armd Bde landed between 7th and 10th June.

6th Guards Tank Bde landed on 20 July.

8th Armd Bde landed on 6 June.

27th Armd Bde landed on 6 June.

31st Tank bde landed on 18 June.

33rd Armd Div landed on 13 June.

34th Tank Bde landed sometime around early July.

So if we are restricting this to D Day plus 9 that limits the units you could choose from?

Al

While we must first consult our Rivet Counter, err I mean the Technical Advisor on such a selection. The Grille H’s saw action primarily on the Eastern Front as well as in Normandy, but is there photographic proof that it was there 9 days after their feet were drying off?

Hi guys,

Good news, Gary confirmed me that he will approve the campaign, so it seems well be able to start building on the 6th. :-)

I'll try to make a ribbon and a banner, if you have any suggestion or ideas for this, post it here. This would really be appreciated. :-)

Alan, the divisions and brigade you mentioned are of course just the British ones, so we still have all the US tank battalions, the 2nd US armored division and the German Panzer Lehr and 21st panzer division.

In my opinion that gives more then enough armour to choose from, but if all you guys want to have it from dday +3 to dday +10, I'll agree with it. It's all about having fun after all, isn't it Jeff. ;-)

Yup, it is Dave! And in honor of that I suggest the ribbon have the initials R.C. on it!

But seriously, I'm far from a rivet counter. I did start this up as a historical campaign, for me research is part of modelling, and is fun. :-)

With the time frame being it now D+3 or D+9, there are more then enough subjects to choose from, axis and allied, with wading gear or without. So, the only thing I'm asking is that the model and particular variant saw action in Normandy at or around DDay. And that you can document it. Doesn't need to be a picture, a text quote can be more then enough.

If you can show me that a char B1 bis was in action on dday, I'll approve it. :-) if you make a great diorama with figures storming the beaches, where the only armour are the hedgehogs on the beach, I'll approve it. If oyu make a great bunker with the turret of an ft 17 on, I'll approve it. It just have to be about dday, and historically correct.

We have almost all Sherman variants, all the funnies, cromwells, Bren and other carriers, Centaurs, PzKw IV and panther A. And probably a whole lot more. And moreover 1000 of pictures and books that tell us of what happend in those few days. It's no fun when there's no challenge. :-)

And your italeri kit, you can do a lot with it, as you know. I don't have to tell you of all the possibilities you have with this kit, transforming it in a M4 with wading gear.

Anyway, it's indeed about fun, and also a bit about a challenge, so have a great time doing both! :-)

Dave

Sal,

The 2nd Panzer arrived in mid June, so, wasn't in action on or before June 9th.

The 2nd Panzer Division had much further to go; its headquarters was at Abbeville, although the Division was strung out along the valley of the Somme. It was ordered to the Front on the 9th June and made its way via Paris. Some of its motorized units were south of Caumont on the 12th but its tanks were strung out as far back as Paris. The Division was fully engaged by the 18th. Luttwitz, its Commander, complained about delays and inadequate transport but does not report any actual damage or loss.13

The 17th SS Panzer Grenadier division however was in action at that time. And they probably also had the SiG 33, but I'm not sure about that.

In any case, if so, all you would need are other decals, which shouldn't be a real problems since there weren't to many on German afv's. :-)

Unless of course we change the time frame, but then it will be more about the battle of Norma,dy instead of dday I'm afraid.

In answer to someone's question above, no, I don't think I'll participate.

Would love to, but don't have time for this as I have 21 month old twins (boy and girl) who have mostly limited my model work to some individual figures when time permits (rarely!).

Other options people may want to consider are the H35 and R35 tanks in use with the Panzer Training Battalion that fought a lot against the US Airborne Divisions.

Someone mentioned the 17th SS...they mainly used the Stug IV. There are also some photos of Marder III H and M in action in Normandy, though I'm not sure whether or not they were in action by June 9th.

Just some food for thought.

@Rob: I'm sorry you can't join, but I of course perfectly understand your personal situation, the twins need you more then us. :-)

I do hope we can get your great advice from time to time.

Jesse,

I'm terribly sorry, i forgot to answer you.

The Tamiya Cromwell will do, since it's - as far as I know - the only decent kit on the market.

Guys,

If you want the order of battle for all troops that landed on the 5 beaches for British, American and Canadian troops, you can find a detailed list here: http://www.6juin1944.com/

There's also an order of battle for all German troops. We can also include the 12th SS Panzer Division, Panzer Lehr and 21st Panzer Division.

Since this is all about D-Day, I would also let LCVP's, DUKW's, etc in... I know, not strictly an AFV, but definitely D-Day. :-)

What do you think?

Ok, I've been trying to create something that looks like a banner, well, here it is:

Being creative in Photoshop is not one of my best qualities, but anyway, tell me what you think. Is it usable? Or will we need help. :-)

Thanks!

Dave

Edit: I propose we use this banner until someone can make a better one, you can use this link: http://gallery.kitmaker.net/data/500/Banner.gif

I used it now in my sig, and it doesnt look that bad. :-) now we still need a ribbon. :-)
