Dimtriy,
EXCELLENT work so far! So what did you start with? The stock Tamiya turret or is that a resin one (CMD?). Do entice me (us) more with continual photos of this project.

Very slick detailing. Like Dave asked, what kits used?

Super detail. The turret is great. Is the turret a resin piece? I like the texture of it. Can't wait to see some more

Very nice looking so far..
Which resin turret is that? Is that the Tamiya T55 aamg?
Modelpoint barrel?
How extensively are you planning to rework the lower hull..
There is a T62 thread in the last few days where several of us expressed frustration at how much 'help' the Tamiya T62 kit needs. Essentially a Tamiya T55 is probably the cheapest way to get fittings..
Looks nice, keep us posted.

Gentlemen, thanks for the comments.
I started with SP Designs T-62 model 1972/1975 resin turret, which is fairly good. Initially I was going to use AEF Designs one but after waiting for it for two month I changed my mind and bought the turret from Jacques (he is sales rep for SP Designs here in the US, as far as I know).
The Tamiya's turret is a complete throw-out. Well, to be totally honest with you, I used couple of details from it. Here is the list: gunner's periscope, loader's periscope, commander's and loader's hatch bases and turret handles.
The turret itself required some work. Hatchway holes have been drilled. Hatch bases, periscopes, main searchlight base and other small details have been filed down and replaced with details made from brass wire, styrene rod, paper (treated with CA glue), or parts from Tamiya's T-62, T-55. Texture work is done with Tamiya's two component putty, applied in thin layers and smoothed with, ehmm, my wet finger
, then one layer of Gunze Sangyo Mr.Surfacer 500 has been applied and sanded with medium grain sand paper. Antenna base, commanders hatch, DHSKM machine gun, snorkel, main searchlight with base and hooks are from Tamiya's T-55. Loaders hatch is a combination of parts from T-62 and T-55. DSHKM console is scratch built from styrene (You cannot use the console from T-55 because it's a little different on T-62). Handles and hand-rails are made from staples and brass wire. I also used metal barrel and resin mantlet cover made by Model Point (these are of exceptional quality) .
Sorry for terrible English, it's not my native tongue
PS. Oh, some Eduard photo-etched parts were used also

Hm, I don't know yet. I will probably add all 13 hatches and torsion casings. Not sure how critical it is, I'm going to use this model in diorama where nobody can see the hull bottom anyway.

Mike, that's exactly what I am going to do. There is a lot of T-55 parts that can be used on T-62

That's some great work you've done !
I'm very interested by that project !
Have you taken a look on the trumpeter T55 ? Do you think it would have been possible to take details from there ?

Penpen, I never had Trumpeter's T-55 in my possesion but from what I heard it's not very accurate.

Dimtriy,
SDP Designs, hummmm sounds like you got a good casting (I did not with 2 different 2S1 castings). So I hope that yours was not too much work.
Hey have you ever seen the CMD turrets? There are a very clean casting and have that rough cast detail it sounds like you placed onto the SP Designs turret.
Hey, do not worry that much for the lower hull, not many of us Russian geeks will knock you for not re-building the entire hull! #:-)
Keep up the good work and post more pics of the "in-progress"

I couldn't say the quality of the turret was exceptional. I would give it 7 out of 10.

Unfortunately not. I have heard that they are very good and I was desperately looking for one but unfortunately I was unable to find any. Is there any online retailers who carry them? Anyway working on SP Design turret was a lot of fun.

Hey, I would probably do this, just to accept the challenge. We Russians have the reputation of being strange people

I will definitely do this. I have to fix a couple of minor problems with the turret (based on the input from the former russian T-62 commander). After that I'm going to work on the upper hull

CMD can be located here: http://www.chesapeakemodels.com/ The take credit card info for you next project.
Hey brother, being that my parents were "Company" folks, I have an extensive love for the Russian people and idiot (pun) ideaology. Hey we Americans invented that fustration at times, you Russian jsut try to improve on it :-) :-) :-)
Something for you to drool over also, right now, I have the Cromwell conversion for the Tamiya IS-III on the shelf: a ISU-152 mod 1945! Now that is one kick-a** TD.

Not an expert on the specific matter at all (russian AFVs I mean) but the impression I've got is very good. Keep on going like this and specially keep us up to date with your progress...

I am impressed with the detial work of the turrent how long has the benchwork been going on. it looked very complex and fun for you to research and detail the armour.
I just picked a tamiya one up at the local hobby shop this is my first tank it looks like it will be fun to put together. I hope mine comes out as 1/2 as good as yours. your work has really inspired me alot.
Hope to see more pictures and the work will help me gain some knowledge of the subject of modern russian armour.

rotmistrov,
ALL I CAN SAY IS WOW !!!! vvery nice work. great detail. I'm building a T-62
as well. Im using the Verlinden detail set minus the turret ( not correct shape) , CMD turret,
Esci T-55 wheels and detail parts, model point barrel, and reworking the Tamiya hull. I think this will be the most accurate/easiest way to get a proper T-62.
Keep the forum posted on progress. THE FOX
