One more word i would like to say about this fake M1A1 "Abrams" tank, which was used in the movie "Hulk"(2003).

Check this tank on http://www.imcdb.org/, or for example on http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_300301-Vickers-Armstrong-FV-4201-Chieftain.html, or if you want to see this tank in the other movies, check http://www.imcdb.org/vehicles.php?make=Vickers-Armstrong&model=FV+4201+Chieftain&modelMatch=1&modelInclModel=on

An interesting subject. I can see no wrong with the idea, tho' it would not appeal to me. Many are builds of 'paper' Tigers/panthers.
Here is a pic of the Tiger used in Saving Private Ryan at the Imperial war museum

cheers....Kenny:-X

Fake M1A1 "Abrams" tank, which was made for the movie industry by Armytrucks Inc.

Vickers-Armstrong FV 4201 Chieftain as M1A1 "Abrams" by Armytrucks Inc, in the movie "Hulk"(2003).

Hi Gang,

one interesting side aspect of our hobby is the use of Tanks and AFV in movies and TV shows. We all know that German tanks of WWII are a rare breed and the movie maker have to look for fake tanks. I remember the Leopard 1 as Panther in "A Bridge too far" or the "Tiger/T-34" from "Kelly`s Heroes". After watching "Defiance" staring Daniel Craig, I still wonder which tank they have used for the Panzer III. Probably something from Russia. Anyone can shed a light on this?
Maybe this could be an idea for a future campaign?

TIA
Hans-Hermann

For a pretty darn good simulation of German WWII armor, check out the HBO TV Series "BAND OF BROTHERS" and the film "SAVING PRIVATE RYAN"- The focus of the films is on the paras of the 101st Airborne in "Band of Brothers" and the US Army Rangers in "Saving Private Ryan"... You'll see some pretty neat TIGER I and StuG III simulations, plus you'll see real, live Hanomag Sd.Kfz.251 Half Tracks, Sd.Kfz.10s, Sd,Kfz.250s and several "Marder III"-type vehicles on the Pz.Kpfw.38(t) chassis. A lot more of this kind of stuff is being seen on film and at reenactments, since the fall of the Soviet Union... The Tiger I was used in both "Saving Private Ryan" and in "Band of Brothers"...

In the "Band of Brothers", the simulated StuG.III looks like it might have been converted from a British "Scorpion", maybe? Not sure on that one- check the Road Wheels, Sprockets and Rear Idlers. It might even be some Post War German Army vehicle. Whatever it is, somebody did a darn GOOD simulation of a StuG.II on this vehicle...

I'm glad that they didn't use a bunch of old M41s and M47s- I remember seeing M41s all the time in TV shows like "COMBAT", "GALLANT MEN", "RAT PATROL" and "GARRISON'S GORILLAS"... For us guys that are also into WWII aircraft, we had "TWELVE O'CLOCK, HIGH", which featured a lot of actual WWII film...

Hi,

I believe the Stug III from Band of Brothers is a converted British FV432, also the JagdPanther looks like a T55.
I've heard the Tank Museums' Tiger 131 recently did some filming for a new Brad Pitt movie...

Didn't they use a Tiran Ti-67 to depict a T55 in "the Beast" or outside USA "the Beast of War". WIth its fantasy m2 hb .50 cal pretending to be a DShK on top. Great movie for anyone who loves modern soviet armour.

Hi there,
first let me thank you for all the useful replies. I have to watch a lot of movies for accuracy.
The Museum für Zeit- und Militärgeschichte in Stammeheim/Germany
houses several props from movies. The obligatory "Tiger 34" and a Schützenpanzer kurz disguised as "Wespe", both in Panzergrey livery and with Zimmerit!!! from the German movie "Stalingrad".
The movie "Buffalo Soldiers" uses an M113 A2G in US Army livery.
Most lately Stammheim Museum provided several vehicles for George Clooney`s "The Monuments Men". Among them M8 Armored Car, M4 A1 Sherman and a Kübelwagen.

Hans-Hermann, here is your answer:

http://www.google.de/imgres?imgurl=http%3A%2F%2Ffilmpanzer.squarespace.com%2Fstorage%2FDefiancePzIII%252520pix3.jpg%253F__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION%253D1231120650239&imgrefurl=http%3A%2F%2Ffilmpanzer.squarespace.com%2Fjournal%2F2009%2F1%2F4%2Fdefiance.html&h=338&w=450&tbnid=_586K8ljn1aSgM%3A&zoom=1&docid=aGscyLtRBmLIkM&ei=zTtZU6fcIIGOtAa3loHIBA&tbm=isch&iact=rc&uact=3&dur=347&page=1&start=0&ndsp=15&ved=0CFsQrQMwAQ

And the StuG in Band of Brothers was born as an AFV432.

If this does go as a campaign I will do M3 halftrack as an Sdkfz251.

I think that Abrams made by Army Trucks Inc. was also used in Iron Man in the background during the final fight. I'm not sure about the scene where he dodges the round and takes it our at the terrorist camp.

There were also Abrams in in the backgrounds of several scenes in Zombieland and the Walking Dead. I think those were the same fake Abrams as well. I'll have to check those the next time FX re-aires either movie...which tends to be often.

In the Captain America movie, Hydra uses what looks to be a FV family APC as the basis for a couple of their APCs.

The one early on in The Walking Dead was a Chieftain:

The Governor's tank used at the prison was an M60A1.

That might be it. I think there's a Bradley as well. Maybe I'm thinking about the CDC scene. Maybe I'm combining scenes in my head.

By the way, I'd be interested in such a campaign.
