One of my latest projects, is a Soviet Naval infantry T-55AD Tank.
I used the Tamiya T-55A Tank

and the Drozd systems were taken from the UM kit

The hull, thanks to Tamiya, was a straight build.

I added the parts from the UM kit, to the turret, relatively easy

The weld seams, are made from stretched sprue.
To be continued

Thanks Mauro!!!
You have already helped, by posting some photos in another thread regarding the T-55AD!!!
But, any help, will be appreciated, especially for the data lines from the computer box in the rear of the turret to the rocket launchers...
And of course any ideas for painting and markings will be welcomed!!!!

...unfortunately SNI don't used this variant of T-55.
If you want to build true copy you must check an army prototypes.

But Taras, at least two of my sources, say, that the Drozd system was rejected from the army, but used by the SNI:
Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drozd)
and
Vasiliy Fofanov's Modern Russian Armor Page
(http://fofanov.armor.kiev.ua/index.html)
I have also couple of other sources, but I have them in my pc at work... I will post them tomorrow...

couple of pictures of the whole tank...

Now, I'm gonna focus on the rear of the turret, trying to reproduce the data lines from the system's computer to the rocket launchers
Thanks to Mauro, I have all the info, I need...

Is very good Orestis, congrats indeed.
You've been doing the AD version, Marc has been doing a stunning Enigma these days...

As always I'm very busy with my job, but I was wondering that It would be really interesting to start a "T-54/55" campaign. Modellers would have several inspirations for that. Think to the different versions, camo schemes and recovery & support vehicles derived from them...

Nice progress Orestis.

According to Osprey's T-54/55 book (written by Steve Zaloga) the SNI had around 250 of these T-55 variants but supposedly classed them as 'in storage'. It says in the late 80s they then switched to T-55's that utilised reactive armor.
In 1988-89 the Naval Infantry had 230 T54-55s in their inventory- I wonder were any of them still AD's with the Drozd system?

Mauro- I reckon a T-55 campaign would be fantastic- I'd definetly join up to it!

Orestis interesting build you have started. I don't think I have ever seen any T-55AD built up before. Details in the UM parts don't seem too bad, maybe a little soft, but good use for the tamiya kit. Can't wait to see this one finished up.

Mauro if you do decide to do a T-55 campaign, I think alot of people would jump on board. I for one would join up, have a T-55 and mod 49 kit just itching to build.

Cheers
Chris

Thanks all of you for the comments!!!
Of course I'm in at the T-55 campaign!!!
The UM kit, is a SKIF kit, but updated with the Drozd system!!! The Drozd sprues are from a new mold, that stands very good...
The mold lines that are visible in the photos, have been seamed out and smoothened, with fine sandpaper...

Hi,

I like what you are doing. Some day I will do almost the same what you do but with the to-55 kit from skif and an Tamiya t-55. i seems that you are good provided with detail photos of the tank so i post two "in action" photos.

These pictures were made in 1988 when the soviet naval infatry was sendt to sumgait in the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic to stop the anti armenian pogrom. I know the qualaty of the photos is bad but t-55ad in action photos are rare

Wow Jochen Thanks!!!!
T-55AD in action!!!!!
Aw I can tell, in the rear of the turret, is only a three-digit number an not the SNI flag...
And the side skirts are clearly visible
I was hopping to omit those...

Hi,

here is the link to the video were the pictures are taken from. (After minute 21:43 You can see that not all t-55 have thier skirts fitted. I think that the tank looks much better with the skirts but it's annoying that um didn't includ them into the kit. One possiblity could be to cannibalize the T-555am2 kit from skif. But 3 kits for one model?

Ps: It seems that the laserrangefinder on your tank is point a bit downwards.

I will ommit the skirts!!! three kits for one, is kind of waste...

Yes, yes, not only pointing downwards, but also slightly misaligned ... I've noticed it, and I have already fixed it! Thanks

Mauro,

Depending on start / finish time I would join a T55 campaign!!
Starting next year would work best for me as I am a slow builder & already in a few. But will watch & learn even if I can't join in!!

Cheers Mike

Okay, now I'm looking for this kit in order to build a T-55AD. I had only seen pictures of this tank, but never knew a model of it existed. Any idea if these tanks would have used the RMSH tracks and T-72 style drive sprockets?

Thanks for adding it to my build list!

Hi Erik, glad to stimulate the modelling instinct. IMHO, don't waste any time in the UM kit, but use as a base TAMIYA's T-55.
Now as far as I know, these tanks were used only by the SNI, because the T-62 and the T-72, were to large to fit in the landing crafts and vessels. So they upgraded their 55's at the AD level. The upgrade took place in the 80's, so I think it is possible, that they used the RMSH tracks and T-72 style drive sprockets.

Yes, it must be so. In the reference pics which I gave you, all the tanks have later track links

Well, that's embarrassing
In deed Mauro, the tracks are later type, but, I really, haven't noticed them... I was looking at the turret details and missed them
