Hello, my name is Tom. I'm a Model-holic.
Everybody - all together - "Hi, Tom!"
The only thing is that I don't think that I have a problem - guess I'm still in the denial phase.
Maybe one day I'll wake up and face my addiction...
"But not today!"
Said as I shut down the "confuser box" and head up to my workshop to do some MODEL BUILDING!

My wife's Dad owns a hobby shop which is kind of a double edged sword.
On the one hand she grew up in a house which was ridiculously hobby-centric (like airplanes hanging from the ceiling & glass display case in the family room). So she tells me when she hears the compressor going downstairs while I'm airbrushing or sees me building a kit on the kitchen table it makes her happy because it reminds her of growing up.
On the other hand, she used to work at the store in the summer during university, so a big downside is when I walk in the door she'll breakdown what everything costs to within a couple bucks. So if I spent too much its hard to hide it. Plus I can only shop at that one store because the in-laws are like the Bloods and Crips with the other hobby shop in town.
I'd like to pretend I romanced her to get kit discounts, but I didn't return to the hobby until 3 years into our relationship.
Cheers
Jeff

My wife has short term memory loss, so I hear about it for a few hours and it's over, till next month. I have a limited income now so I try not to go over my budget of $25 each month. Yet like many guys have said, the bills and important stuff get taken care of first and then I take my monthly hobby allowance and P/U a set or two of figures or supplies. The exception was the new P.T. 109 which I made plans for and told her, of course she duly forgot, but my daughter chipped in 1/2 the price for Xmass. Got to love it when your kid/s remember what your favorite hobby is. She really didn't turn out 1/2 as bad as I did, thank god for that!!!

On that note, I've got it pretty easy. I just leave it in the car until the next day (my wife and I have seperate vehicles) and when I come home for lunch (I get home before her) first place I go is my modeling closet/room and hide them behind all the kits I already have!
Now there's a man what has a model for (getting and sneaking in) models similar to mine! I too have a slightly-separate sched from SWMBO, and also a separate set of wheels...
Only my stash closet... It is nice and deep - but just wide enough for kits to stack neatly on one side to form a boxed-styrene wall and leave a very narrow isle for me to squeeze along to get deeper into the stacks... so trying to slide anything thicker then maybe 1/2 inch in behind the stacks will both cause an avalanche - road-block and be muy hard to hide from those ever-watchful and meticulous eyes! Guess I could shift over to those paper armor models!

I have to admit I fall into this group as well. I simply take my wife into the shop with me and walk round aimlessly for about half a hour picking up kits and turning them over say things like "this is like the one i've got but has x and y and 3 of this and that, could probably get it cheaper at... by which time an hour has lapsed and at the point I engage the guy behind the counter talking about some rare military piece of kit which is yet to come out in any scale other that 1:1. By this stage I normally can pick up a kit Ive had my eye on and compare it to one which would cost an arm and both legs, at this point the shop assistant is normally cashing up for the day... its usually "just get it" to which I sprint up, buy the kit and have the lid open, inside our car parked outside the shop before she has a chance to change her mind.... works a treat she feels like she made the decision and I have a new kit. win win

Like 99% of all of you, we live on a budget. All the bills are paid early, including paying off our 30 year mortgage in 18 years, as well as the loans on both cars. We live below our means, but have everything we want. Our son, who at 25 still lives with us has everything he needs as well.
I save $25 per week so my modeling fund just about always has the cash to pay for all the packages that appear via the UPS man, or what I buy at our LHS.
When those rare times come when I charge a new kit or buy supplies that are a "must have" she's never says a word. I just get that " not again" look as I head into my man cave.
I don't drink, and I gave up smoking years ago, a nasty habit that she still has. So my modeling is a drop in the bucket to what a carton of cigarettes cost these days.
