Good day to all of you fellow modellers from Greece.
I am planning to build a dio in 1/48,but I lack any reference about this particular abrams.
Could anyone help me by providing any reference like:
-What means this FX on the shields? Is it from F troop,3rd Armored Cavalry?
-Which is the name of the tank writen on its barrel?
-Are there any other photos of this tank?
Thank you all in advance and look forward hearing from you soon in order to go on with my project.
All the best,
zetman

You could try searching the DVIDS site, they have tons of pictures there. This particular tank may not have a name, not all of them were named by their crews. I can't give you much information on the unit the tank belongs to or the F and X markings on the skirt, I'm pretty sure it's an Army unit and I was with the Marines in Iraq. Wish I could be more help.

Hi Zisis.

This Abrams is a M1A2 Abrams from an Army unit. Only the Army has the A2 variants. It's from F Company, the X stands maybe that this tank is the executive officer tank from his platoon?
I have see sometime another photo of this situation, but i don't know where i see it.
And this Abrams has a name of his barrel.

Sorry i have no more inormations

That is an M1A2 from Fox Troop of 3 ACR at Al Asad Airbase in al Anbar Province, south and west of the Euphrates River and south of Haditha, Iraq in July '03. A bunch of Mig 25s (pictured) and SU 25s were discovered burried in the desert sands. Some were recovered (see below), while others were simply crushed.

Thank you all for your interest.
I have seen all these links before.I have been working this idea since 2008,but since I lack any reference I left it.
My intention was to build it in 1/48 using the kitech M1A1 and Revel's mig-25 converted into a BM version. Then I got Gaso.Line M1A2 abrams in resin and some verlinden figures and managed to work it once again. But as I would like to have an as accurate as possible model, cant find info of markings plus the name written on the barrel.Below you can see a photo of my initial effort before models go to the "surgical operation"

Read my post above. It is an M1A2. I know guys who were there. You can also tell from the shape of the TCs hatch and the .50 cal mount.

The visible .50 MG mount is a giveaway for the A2...

Wish only we could find the markings now and the name of the beast.
On the way are some aftermarket detail sets for the foxbat,and...to be continued.

Also as I said in my original post, it is from F troop, 3 ACR, most likely the Troop XOs tank.

Tamiya has markings for two tanks from F troop in their 1/35 M1A2 kit, the markings are for tank 23 and tank 43 (options A and B).

They are:

A: M1A2 of 2nd Platoon, F Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Iraq, April 2003.
B: M1A2 of 4th Platoon, F Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Iraq, April 2003.

The XOs tank (FX) would have the right side bumper number of F65, as opposed to F 23 or F 43 on the right side. The left side would be lll on top, with 2/3 CAV below it. You can see these on the Tamiya decal sheet for the same kit, on the right side about in the middle of the sheet.

The same three black stripes would be around the bore evacuator as well. These denote the 3rd Troop (F Troop) of 2nd Squardon.

I can't make out what is on the barrel though.

The XO had a Bradley and the Commander had the tank. FX is the designation for the HQ Section and on all vehicles in the section (tank, Bradley, HMMWVs, M577, M88. The Commanders tank bumper number was HQ-66.

Thats right. I forgot the XO has a Brad in a Cav Troop. Like Steven said above, the bumper number for the troop Commander's tank should be F 66, not F 65. The rest still applies.

oh yeah. F66, not HQ66... that was the Squadron Commanders tank.

I'll check around at the unit to see if I can find out the name on the tube

Still working on it. I've talked to a few guys who we in the Squadron during that time but the unit was split throughout western Iraq during that deployment so they weren't around Fox Troop. They are working on getting in touch with the Commander from then to find out the name. Sorry it's taking so long but I havent forgotten or given up yet...

Z,

I sent a message to the former Commander who's tank it was to see if he has additional pics or remembers the name. I attached the link to your forum also. Maybe he'll come up on the page... if not, maybe he'll reply to my message with good new... or, maybe I'll get nothing. We shall see.

I found some pics of other F Trp tanks at the Regimental Museum this week. I noticed that they all have a stencil of a fox on both sides of the front of the turrent. I'm working on getting a copy of the image for you.

More to follow...

Steven, its really a pleasure having you on my side to this kinda "hard" project. I praise your efforts and thanks for the info provided - as mentioned above - and being really thankful.
Since we finger out the data infos for the M1A2,at the moment I am collecting all these aftermarket sets for the mig-25 and the conversion to a BM version.
I am waiting some set from abroad,a detail set from my friend Dave and data stencils from Begemot.Once got all the staff together,I will go on the construction and a fully detail project will follow
So stay tuned and I wont dissapoint you.
Thank you all for your interest.
Cheers,
Z
