It should be noted that only the all-metal tracks are included, and therefore, not ALL Korean war subjects can be built out of the box.

True, only the metal tracks are included. But I've yet to see a Korean War Chaffe with rubber tracks. i've seen several vehicles based on chaffees (in particular the M19) but not a Chaffe.
Cheers!

I "think" this is from Korea, although the picture quality is awfully good for a 60 year old photograph...

Hi Stefan, not a problem! By the way, if the pic is indeed Korea, let me know what edits you might want...

I think these are troopers from the 187th RCT , so,the tank should be as well. I'd say the tracks could be rubber like here or steel. Would not be a surprise to see a mix

Tom, I will check my resources again and come back to you with a small paragraph on the track issue. Of course the tracks were available at the time in Korea and it can't be ruled out that the metal tracks were replaced in the field, so I guess technically Jesse's right.
Cheers!

Overall, I think it's good review. I really like that you've put effort into the decal schemes. This is typically just glazed over.
Oh... does this kit come with a barrel that does NOT have the 2 flat bands around the center? Or do the instructions just tell you to remove those?

So I had another look at my resources (4 different books specifically on the Korean War) and I found one single picture of an M24 with the T85E1 rubber chevron tracks. I also found some more information on making option one, supporting that it is actually from the 78th HEavy Tank Battalion. I will send an update of the text to Tom asap.
Jesse, the barrel is the same as in the previous release, though this is not per se wrong. I have seen many Korean War pictures where this feature is clearly visible. It can be easily sanded off if not needed.
Cheers!

Here's a caption I've found for the picture Jesse has posted :
"Newly landed U.S. paratroopers greet 1st Cavalry Division tank crewmen at Sukchon, North Korea, during the Korean War in October 1950..."

History of the 1st Cav in the Korean War.
http://www.first-team.us/tableaux/chapt_04/
The M24 could also have belonged to the 16th Reconnaissance Company or possibly but less likely A Company, 71st Tank Battalion (-). Both were assigned to the 1st Cav and both had M24s but had lost most of their M24s in the earlier battles by Oct.

Agreed, the first X Chaffees all had the same gun, so they were definitely in Korea. And like you said, if you don't need it, it's simple enough to remove it.

The steel track and rubber track each require a different drive sprocket. Both drive sprockets are included in the kit (or at least were in the 'early version').

Damn. I just left the Korean War Museum about an hour ago. I'm sure they had a Chaffee there but I was too busy photographing the SU-100 and T-34/85.

Thanks for the update, Tom!
Indeed they are, and clearly marked as not to be used.
I don't see how this changes the review?
Cheers!
Stefan

Looks like there will be another M24 Chaffee in my build future way sooner then I thought.

Hi Stefan,
The only issue I see is when you said:
" In any case, it is quite probable that at some point a broken track would be replaced by a T85E1."
I don't think they would mess around with replacing the entire sprocket just to replace track, but I could be wrong. Only if they were being deployed back to somewhere where they would need to be running on roads frequently... like Japan or something.
