I just found it at a hobby shop. Is that meant to be their new paint for rubber tires?

I have it too. Better than working with making flat black work.

Will have to check this out. I've been using their Dark German Gray with a few drops of Black for rubber tires.

My go-to is Nato black. How does this compare?

I make my own tire black from Tamiya acrylics, flat black, red brown and a bit of grey to lighten. Works well and looks realistic. Cheers.

I'm with you, Jesse. I use NATO black for worn rubber and flat black for new.

Hi All,
Curiously my jar's labelled 'XF-85: Rubber Black' is this the paint in question? XF-82 is 'Ocean Grey 2 RAF' on this side of the pond.
On another note: has anyone tried 'XF-84 Dark Iron' and 'XF-79: Linoleum Deck Brown'
I've jars of all three and have found them very helpful!

I too have used that on my tracks. Then some dark washes etc.
It'd be so much easier to keep track of things if Tamiya had just changed the XF to TS.
I've just used the Dark Iron (XF-84) on the engine of a Dragon 250/8 scrubbed with pencil dust (graphite)and was very pleased.
Graphite over other colours (greens and reds primarily in engine bays), can depict an 'oily' sheen (just try rubbing XF-79 with some ground up pencil lead with a stiff brush) that I find quite pleasing to the eye.

The jar may be XF-85 but the spray can is definitely TS-82. Confusing, I know, but that's the way Tamiya does things.

Hmmm... XF 84, XF 85 -- seems they're not listed in Tamiya's on-line catalog. Would any of you folks direct me to a more current list? Cheers, Tat

Thanks Tom. The online catalog I use as reference stops at XF83. And I have always thought that this was the all-inclusive list as posted at Tamiya's international site. I better have a look-see at the LHS and check. Cheers, Tat

Looking at Tamiya's paint chart, I can barely discern the rubber black from NATO black. And, you can order the 23ml NATO black instead of a few jars of rubber black.

I have the XF-85 Rubber Black and the XF-84 Dark Iron. Tried out the XF-85...I LOVE IT!!! And, it's enamel, not acrylic...comes in a bottle similar in size to Testors. Awesome paint! Smoooooooth as sin....Worth every penny. About 2 1/2 weeks from Asia, but...yeah.

But, why enamel? I rarely hand paint a kit. And, Tamiya acryls are some of the best for airbrushing.

I just use Vallejo Dark Rubber. Color looks great and doesn't leave brush marks when you brush it on. Better than Tamiya ever thought of being.

I use the Linoleum Deck Brown mixed with Hull Red for a really nice shade of German Red Brown camouflage paint.
All the best,

Yes, it is true that Tamiya requires certain skills to use. However, it is great when run through an ab. I am going to order black rubber and dark iron, just to test them out. I feel that I will continue to use Tamiya NATO black, for rubber. It can be found in the larger bottles. I am not sure, concerning dark iron. I believe that in 1:35, this is better represented by black or gunmetal.
