Hi, I recently completed a Tamiya Kingtiger Ardennes front and I did not put any zimmerit. From what I read in some books, Germans stopped using zimmerit sometime June or September 1944. Since the Battle of the Bulge started ...I think around December 16, 1944...this may mean that some King tigers do not have zimmerits. If you could get your hand on some Concorde published magazines there are some pics of KT w/o zimmerit and all of them are using the ambush camo pattern.

BTW, what type of turret are we talking about? If it is the Henschel, then you could do w/o the zimmerit...I am not sure about the Porche turrets.

Photographic evidence clearly shows that many of the Konigstigers that served in the Ardennes had no Zimmerit coating. If the turret is the Serien Turme, ("Henschel" or "Production" turret) that is...

If your King Tiger has a "Porsche" turret, then it would need Zimmerit.

If you are looking to model a Tiger II in the Bulge that didn't have zimmerit I would say that you could safely build and paint one that belonged to sSSPz Abt 501. The 501 had been totally re-equiped with the Tiger II after the battles in France, and by the time they took delivery of their new tanks zimmerit was no longer being used. On the other hand if you want to model one with zimmerit during the Bulge, it is possible that sPz Abt 506 still had some Tiger II's with zim. The 506 took delivery of 45 Tiger II's between 8-20 and 9-12-44, zimmerit was discontinued on 9-9-44. According to the combat diaries in "Tiger's in Combat II" they still had some of these tanks during the B.O.B. So although I haven't found any pics I would say there could have been some Tiger II's with zim there.
