Glueing tracks, help!
Posted: Saturday, July 20, 2013 - 05:17 AM UTC
Trying to glue a set of AFV Club tracks and a set of Hobby Boss tracks for their Super Pershing. They will not take crazy glue, Tamiya liquid cement or Testors tube glue. Any suggestions?

staples or needle and thread, if you really want to go the glue route give epoxy a try.

You could try epoxy, but there is no "second chance". Staples are your best bet.

I would do super glue again and put weighted objects, rubberband, etc to hold it in place where you want it overnight. This will help the track to stretch and stay also while the glue works. Be sure the parts aren't painted and you could even wash or sand them up a little. I usually use coins stacked/wedged under the hull to force the track down. Also place the connecting ends on the bottom so you can hide it in ground work/mud if need be. Another option is behind a covering fender.

Hi James,
I just used Revellsī contacta on my Scimitar build and that worked fine. You have to trap or clamp them overnight though.
As for the HB tracks I don't know, but if it goes tits up PM me, I have a pair of tracks I didn't use and you can have them.

Okay guys I'll try it again but I have to warn you, or myself! I found a jar of rubber cement and that may be next. Wish me luck. Paul, I may be contacting you in a day or two

Hello James,
Rubber cement does not have the holding power for this
type of material.
Cheers

Okay Joe, I'll stay away from it. These tracks are strange, they appear to be made from actual rubber and nothing will stick to them. Every glue I mentioned above just flakes right off. Strange stuff

Hi James,
As the others suggested stitch or staple. You can also
try super glue designed especially for rubber and vinyls.
One such product:
Insta-Flex Clear Rubber Toughened CA
Cheers,
Joe

You might also want to roughen up the mating surfaces a little.

I have been turned off by kits with individual tracks because I tried once with glues an never went back always bought the metal or afv for the Abrams but now I can use thin fishing line or staples that opened up a whole new world to me thank you I need something to get me out of this funk I'm in.
Happy modeling.

For AFV Club 1-piece tracks I've had very good results using CA glue. Regular plastic cement, (Tenax) will work but the resulting bond is not strong enough to take the tension when they're installed on the model.
For the HobbyBoss Pershing 1-piece tracks, I have yet to find any adhesive or solvent that has any effect at all on them. Too bad, because they're nicely done. I'm using an extra set of Tamiya tracks on mine, or Friuls if the timing is right (long story).

Just a quick update guys, the rubber cement worked and you can't even see where it was glued.

glad to hear! I have found that Tamiya extra thin cement works well, as well good old fashioned super glue. I had the tracks on my M41 give me some fits, but it was nothing that I couldn't over come, I had to be patient, and I ended up using the heated screw driver trick to melt the studs into the track, worked like a charm!

hmmm...sounds like they might actually be rubber! Maybe tire patch cement is the answer..

that's a good idea, the rubber patch cement, never even thought of that.
Regardless I totally cursed myself, as today I had such a problem doing the tracks, that I ended up making my first diorama, I'm pretty upset about it, but at the same point, I got to learn and turn a turd of a situation into a less of a turd! if that makes sense?
