Hi everyone.
I am building a King Tiger and I'm using Cavalier Zimmerit. One thing that I've noticed is there are two versions of side armor for the zimmerit which leaves two extra panels of side armor zimmerit. I hold to the waste not belief. I don't have the patience or dexterity to model my own zimmerit so I was going to build a late war KT with zimmerit only on the side body armor. Perhaps a cannibalized KT in Berlin/Hungary or Czechoslovakia. Feasible or just a what if build.
Thanks everyone.

There is a picture of king tiger #100 of the 503 ss,Pz,Abt from the last days of Berlin. Not sure if it had zimmerite on the hull sides but I guess any thing was possible.they had to use any vehicle that was available.

Alex;
Sounds an interesting idea! A "parts-tank" or shop special.
But, not to be all wet-blankie and such... probably, IF there was zimm on the sides, there would be zimm on the glacis and zimm on the rear plate, as well.
A "cannibalized" KT could donate a complete hull or a turret, or wheels or tracks or a gun or hatch-covers, etc., but probably not separate plates from that hull, and, so far as I know, all KT were made either with factory zimm (Sep 1943 to Sep 1944 production), or after the zimm order was cancelled (SEP 1944). Therefore, not likely, it seems, that one could get a Tiger II with zimm on only part of its hull.
It IS plausible, I think, for a zimm'd turret on a later-production non-zimm hull, and maybe vice-versa. And this leads of course to interesting "what-if" paint schemes such as new turrets in red-oxide primer on old camo'd hulls, etc.
But, of course, this is a model - and it's YOUR model, and it can come out any way you really like it!

Tigeriv: I will have to take a look at that picture (I'm sure it's out there in cyberspace). I saw 101 from the same unit yet it looks free of zimmerit.
That's kind of what I was thinking Bob. I just hate having this extra stuff lying around that can't be added to my spare parts collection. I have dexterity issues with my hands so modeling zimmerit is beyond my capabilities .

Hi, All!!! According to all my sources, Zimmerit was applied to GERMAN armor from December, 1943 to September, 1944... That's only 9-10 months inclusive, gentlemen. Give or take a few days... That means A LOT of German armor didn't even have it. Personally, I build a lot of my German armor without Zimmerit- But that's just me... I think your idea is entirely plausible...
My opinion: Build whatever makes you happy... Photos have survived showing Panthers, early and late TigerIs and IIs with Zimmerit on the hulls, but not on the turrets and vice-versa. That means some form of cannibalization is evident, as having been done by German Maintenance Crews- that is, if there was time.
Like I said, build what makes YOU happy...

Till today there is no evidence of Tiger II half zimmeritted. There are some pics of such Panthers or Tigers but not Tiger II.
here are the pics of the 100
Some sci-fi Tigers II (for example half zimmerited appears here and there from time to time)

Pawel is RIGHT!!! Battle-damaged Pz.Kpfw.IVs, Panthers and Tiger Is sometimes underwent this kind of "cannibalization". Unlikely for Tiger IIs. Besides, the whole hull, not just the side panels would have had the Zimmerit, so I stand corrected...
I'd save those panels; you never know when you might need them to make a part or a repair...
