Olivier, I see by the last pics you posted that it looks like there are tabs that hold the mounting rails to the bottom of the rack. Could you cut those tabs off and glue the rails to the face of the rack? Jeff T.

Say "Olivier" that ball and chain set look as good as the old Legend ball and chain set!

Thanks Olivier, that's what I needed to see. It doesn't make this any less frustrating, and Academy's turret basket is losing even more favor with me. They did not represent the basket's frame properly, presumably because they were trying to provide structural integrity to the basket while keeping costs down. All of the ribs for the framework are supposed to be thin sheet metal, at least around the perimeter of the box, and the chains are supposed to be attached directly to the turret basket's frame. There should be nothing hanging down from the lower framework. Academy messed up even more on the back of the turret basket where the slats are, so it looks weird because there is supposed to be a solid piece of metal running across the width of the back just above the metal for the frame, and they have a gap instead which throws all of the slats off. All of this is represented in the last photo that Jeremy Coyle posted from primeportal up above. If you need any further help visualizing this, let me know and I can try to draw it out for you.
Thanks for the answer Jeremy. I guess a drawing will help for a better understanding.
Do you think it possible to thin the whole underside structure?

That was the second option I was going to mention.

Jeff
each of the options would not be that simple in fact. Cutting the tab is easy but the PE part will have only a limited contact surface to be glued on the basket frame.
Sanding down the whole structure could be easy if only it were not already assembled.
So far, I'm still hoping that I will find a suitable piece of chain.
I'll let you know which option I'll finally choose.

I think that thinning the frame around the perimeter is not at all a bad solution, much like you would do with overly large fenders, just taper them so they are very thin at the bottom and use your painting skills to help them represent a thinner metal. I would also sand down the cross sections so that they are level with the mesh at the bottom of the basket.
I will make a drawing for you you shortly.

I apologize for the lower quality, I have to use a camera since my scanner is no longer functional. Let me know if this helps out.

I am having the same problem as Oliver.
I am having to re-due my ball and chain due to a disaster with some acid.
I had the Academy kit to start with and the chain looks correct.
Becourse I have had start again I purchased the ET kit and the chain is wrong.
I have now found some chain which might work, unfortunately it is a round link but by flattening the links it looks very close.
Going to take me some time to do all of the links tho'..cheers....Kenny
PS good luck Oliver, let us know what you do; will be helpfull to me

Kenneth, this is not a Mk.4 on this picture, but Mk.2D

Hi all,
ET Model sent me another set as the original one did not have the length of chain. This one looks better. The links are shorter and rounder. I assembled again the side section I posted in my first picture and it looks better but maybe a bit too short now

Olivier,
I would call it "close enough" and move on with the model before it drives you insane... Remember, that we build these things for fun and sometimes for training aids for our troops.
The Merk turret looks good, please feel free to post more pics

Thanks for the comments John.
Don't worry about my mental health, as soon as I feel that this one turns me crazy I shift to one of the four other kits currently on my workbench
Will do for the pics.
