Re "Desert Rats" - the Desert Rats was the 7th Armoured Division (British) which used the jerboa (a hopping desert rat) as its emblem.

The "Rats of Tobruk" as they were named, IIRC, by Lord Haw Haw, were the soldiers of the Australian 9th Division.

Thanks Rob for clearing that up. I did remember the 7th Armd but the info on the Aussie 9th Div is new to me.

Also a photo of Sgt A Longhurst who took out a DAK tank (type not specified) with sticky bombs then killed the crew firing his vickers from the hip!

Excellent ref pix!! Thanks for posting. Well dug in positions. I am sure they had to bust their backs digging those in that god-aweful rocky soil. No materials laying about for overhead cover use though. Good thing overhead bursts were not that common yet.
Not sure how one would fire a Vickers from the hip without severe burns. Asbestos glove maybe?
