hey there everybody
ive started my next diorama, which is based late ww2, includes a flakpanzer wirbelwind and feldkuche,. The scene is/will be the feldkuche set up in the ruins of a building, with the flakpzr outside, while the crew get are getting some supper. Ive completed the basics of the ruins, and have also done the groundwork for the pavement and cobblestone road outside. my question for today issss: (for 100 points) whats the best colour to basecoat and paint cobblestone?
i know that there is no specific cobblestone color, But im worried about doing it too brown or too grey. i was thinking of spraying the whole thing black as a base coat but im not too sure.
any suggestions? ps - will post some piccies ASAP
cheers alpha

alpha, black works well as a base coat. I built a cobblestone base (scratch from lentils) and gave it a spray of flat black. Then the grays and browns. It suited me fine. good luck!

good to know i had the right idea of a black basecoat! my cobblestone effect came about from plaster that i poured directly onto the base, and then carved each cobblestone from there (ergh!) i did the same with the pavement - u will see on the pics (being worked on) when i post them (i hope) a bit later.
thanx for the help - its good to get as many tips as possible!

I like the angular shape of the base - is that the way it's going to stay?
You're going to need an equal amount of rubble on the outside of the building as well as the inside. Bet you're planning it just want to paint first.
The wood floor is nicely done.
The wall is a bit bare on the right side - you could put up a poster of something or part of a down spout to fill in the space.
Great job though so far - carving all those cobbles must have been a joy #:-)
Check out the Gallery Dioramas Reference section there are a number of photos of side walks/streets in there.

Great work Alpha!
I did the same on these for my "Hunter or Hunted" Diorama.
The only advantage I see to the extra work of carving them in plaster (or in my case in Durham’s water putty) is that as I sculpted the brick or cobble, chips and breaks naturally occur. Once these are painted black and weathered they look like the natural wear and tear any road would receive.

The work is going nice as i can see. The carving is going very nice and also the interior of the house . I ll keep an eye on this, as it looks interesting and also due to the different base scheme

thanx all for the encouragement! - ive done a little more overnite, adding more rubble and debris to the front and other end of the house. To neil - yep, like your pics show, i agree that sculpting it directly on tho its a bit loborious i found that the natural settling, chipping and scratches you get add to the effect. I was very pleased with the results of the cobble and the pavement. I used a set of 'rolson pick & hooks' to scribe the plaster. These are fine pointed tools that are ideal for scribing. post more piccies asap!
