I have a question..

I have a Tamiya 1/35 M36 Jackson kit. The barrel has a muzzle brake on it. Did the WW2 M36 Jackson have a muzzle brake? I cannot find any real pictures of WW2 M36's with a muzzle brake?

Thanks for any advice.

Hi Spence.
My understanding is some were fitted with a double baffle muzzle break like those found on the Pershing late in the war.
Good luck, keep us posted on your progress.
Eric.

The single baffle muzzle brake on tamiya's m36 was a post world war 2 item as well as the bore evacuator those are the same items fitted to the post war M26A1 pershing and M46 patton yor best bet would be to build it as a korean war M36 Jackson

Okay, so there is no saving it by getting an aftermarket barrel? Who makes a good M36 Jackson in 1/35?

I also have the Testor/Italeri M36B1 Jackson as well. How does it hold up per the WW2 Originals?

Thanks to you both for advice.

Aparently the only down side of the AFV Club kit is that it has an M10 engine deck. See this review

Spence: in all reality, a nicely done and very accurate M10, M10A1, M36 or M36B1 does not exist in 1/35. AFV Club and Academy attempted to update the decades old Tamiya kits but their efforts fell short (dimensional errors). Same with their M18 GMCs.

Allied fans await new renderings...

The Tamiya M36 is also over scale at 1/35th so I'm not sure how a 1/35th scale barrel will look.

Wow.......for such an important and favored tank killer.....its amazing that no one makes a decent kit.

I wonder how short the barrel would end up being if I just cut off the baffle on the Tamiya kit...LOL. If none of them are correct.....why get one over the other.

Thanks

Go ahead and cut it off Spence and add either the threaded end or the protective sleeve.

Whats up Jeff.....good to hear from ya!
Yea....I think I will.....just have to figure out where to get a protective sleeve....or howto make one.....maybe plastic tubing? Also what tge overall length the barrel should be.....need to do some research.

Wow....I cant even find an aftermarket barrel that would work. The only one I did find has the same baffle....and says it is for the M26 Pershing and M36???

http://www.ebay.com/itm/RB-Model-1-35-35B85-Barrel-90mm-M3-L-53-for-M26-Pershing-M36-Model-Kit-MARB87-/400341707007?pt=FR_YO_JeuxJouets_MaquettesModelisme&hash=item5d3639a8ff

I know they are both 90mm.......but looing at original photos the baffle was not used. I wonder if one can get the protective sleeve to use in place of the baffle?

I built a Tamiya M36 (afaik no one called it the "Jackson") back in the Early 1970s. As has been pointed out the gun tube is wrong for WW2. The kit itself is also much closer to 1/32nd than 1/35th making aftermarket stuff problematic. I have the Academy kit which I like, it comes with an option for all three barrels, top cover for the turret and some other small modifications. You can read reviews here;

http://www.perthmilitarymodelling.com/reviews/vehicles/academy/acd1395.htm

And here;

http://www.missing-lynx.com/reviews/usa/m36_fdesisto.html

The "Pershing" style muzzle brake appeared very late in the war and I am not sure that it got into combat.

Maybe when Dragon has finished making the final, final, final Panthers, Tigers, and StuG's, they'll make a new M10, or M36.
