Dissatisfied with Vallejo primer, I bought AK Interactive acrylic primer. It's impressive. It sprays extremely well out of the bottle and has no odor. 6 hours after spraying, I tested its adhesion with very sticky 3M blue masking tape. No lifting whatsoever.

When it comes to primer, AK will be my only choice from now on.

Yep, AK primer is top notch! Way better than Vallejo.

Do you thin yours a little or just spray it neat?

I didn't thin at all. Since I didn't know what to expect, I sprayed with my Paasche H w/ a .3 mm nozzle. It sprayed beautifully, though.

Now I'm stuck with some unused bottle of Vallejo primer.

Same here. Don't know what I'll do with the brand new Vallejo bottle I gave. I may keep it just in case.

I'll think about trading.

Here's what I'm thinking about winter camo chipping. Since cured Vallejo primer is impervious to Windex, I can use it (Russian Green or Dark Yellow) as a base coat, spray Tamiya white and chip Tamiya with Windex.

Yes, AK primers are excellent and with different base colors. Actually you get 2-in-1: primer and base coat, nice thing for modulation etc. . No thinning spraying with my HP-CS with 0.35mm nozzle, no lifting after fully dry and they sand very well.

What is you pressure setting for AK primers to avoid nozzle tip clog? I usually have it on my bottom-feed Badger as it needs higher pressure. The HP-CS is less affected.
I'm thinking about adding some retarder but have not tried yet.

Pressure setting is about 20psi, but I have also FPC before the airbrush (on the quick release), this gives me more control. Depends also on the climate conditions, try to add some thinner, maybe this will help. If you have Tamiya X-20A (acrylic thinner) try it, I think there's retarder (or flow improver, not sure) in it. Works for me . Or the brand one.

Interresting. Has anyone tried to sand the primer?

Cheers

I did several times, wet or dry, no problems. Just be sure that the primer is fully dry (I usually left it day or two)

Cheers!

What do you use to clean your AB after shooting AK primer?

For my first try, I used my Paasche H and cleaned it with lacquer thinner because I didn't know if Windex or IPA would clean it. I plan to use my Iwata HP-CS or SAR to shoot AK primer.

Water, works for me . But just in case after several primer/colors shoot some alcohol(95%) for thoroughly cleaning.

Cheers!

Can anyone tell me whether or not IPA/Windex turns AK primer into a gooey mess a la Vallejo primer? I once had a terrible experience when trying to clean Vallejo primer with IPA.

I can test myself but won't be able to do so until March 10th or so.

What were the issues with the Vallejo primer? I have a bunch I have yet to use. When I did use it, the issue I had was I needed to wait a few days to sand it. I have been using the new Gunzo Mr. Surfacer 1500 black lately but I have a lot of the base Vallejo primers waiting for some projects.

Windex/IPA + Vallejo primer when it starts to dry = Gooey Mess (e.g., a nightmare to clean the AB).

If you haven't yet gotten the answer to this, Chris, I can try tonight and can let you know. I've been testing various things lately and this one was one on the list. As you, I had a mess to clean out of the airbrush when I tried to clean the gun with Windex after shooting Vallejo primer.

I have used a product called "Simple Green" to clean My AB after shooting Vallejo primer with good success. Whether it will work with AK or not, I have no idea.

Simple Green doesn't remove Vallejo paint when it starts to dry.

I handed painted AK primer on a piece of plastic and left it for 15 minutes. Windex removed it without creating a gooey mess. AK's Perfect Cleaner was absolutely fantastic. It dissolved dried AK primer and easily removed it.

I need to know about the ingredients of AK Perfect Cleaner!

the AK primer sounds intriguing. I've had mixed success with the Vallejo primer. My bottle of black seems to love to clog the AB, but my bottle of grey shoots like a breeze. Vallejo AB Cleaner easily removes even the dried scum at the top of the cup with no difficulty.

Would Vallejo airbrush cleaner work with AK? Worth a try I think (at least to initially remove the primer from the brush).

I have never tried this with the primers but I don't see why not. I have used Vallejo airbrush cleaner to clean my AB after using the AK modern armor color with no issue.
