When shading a uniform camo pattern, for instance any kind of WWll German patterns, is it preferable to shade and highlight the base uniform color, then apply any patterns in thin coats hoping the shading will still be evident? Or post-shading after all the patterns are finished, which means shading each individual colored area with it's own color shades? I've tried both methods and am not really satisfied with results. Using exclusively acrylics - some Tamiya and mostly Citadel.

A guy on another site I've been following shades the base first, then the patterns. His success seems to come down to heavily thinned filters to tie the two together.

One well known modeler has a new book out and in it, he explains his technique is to paint the shadows and highlights, then paint the pattern.

Hi Group,
Matt, very sorry to not follow up. I haven't been back to this thread since I posted.

You could do a lot worse than get Calvin Tan's book about painting SS figures from Osprey. Granted it's about SS figures, but this naturally covers a lot of camo painting. The methods used should be compatible with other patterns.
