Hi guys,
I am looking for good references of german markings during WWII.
I would like to get information of the sizes, colours, fonts, units, etc.
Thanks in advance,
Angel

That book, much to my chagrin, has yet to be written. The Panzer Colors series does a decent job, but is replete with errors in the wake of new research, new finding. Another book called Wehrmacht Vehicle Identification guide does an ok job, but it too has a lot of errors. One example, it attributes the Lebensrune shield and symbol to the Third Panzer Division, when it actually belonged to the 4th (as does Panzer Colors btw).
I would love the idea of a single reference volume that breaks down unit markings and turret number styles for each fighting unit, including Panzer Division, SS Panzer Panzer Division, and various Abteilungeng.
Mind you, many units have volumes dedicated to them alone. EG 653rd Panzerjaegerabteilung. Some of these references--covering just one unit--are very expensive.
Anyway, panzer colors is a good start, if you can get it--but be careful as it is frought with errors.

I bought "Waffen-SS Divisions 1939-45" at the half price book store for 8 bucks.
Pretty essential vehicle identification guide that works for me!

Just be aware that both Panzer colors and the series by Chris Bishop are replete with errors.

Concerning Panzer Colors, there is a well known list cataloging the errors that have since been discovered with new research. That series is nigh 40 years old.
As far as the Chris Bishop series, I only have the Wehrmacht vehicle guide. There is of course an error in the title alone. The author of course means Heer, not Wehrmacht, which incorporates all branches of the vaunted German Armed Forces, Heer, Luftwaffe, Kriegsmarine, and Waffen SS.
For starters, the book mistakes the Panzer Division with the Lebensrune as belonging to the 3d Panzer Division. It in fact belongs to the 4th. There are other errors but I feel that one alone impeaches the text.
I still like going through it time to time to see camo and marking schemes that are appealing, but I always verify anything in there with other more reliable sources.

I'm glad I saw this post post. I recently acquired some of the earlier Panzer Colors series and thought them excellent. However, it appears that I shall have to do further research.

They are an excellent starting point--just make sure you corraborate any illustration of interest with additional research.
I am sure someone else can post the catalog of corrections that has been made. ...

An FYI for those who don't own any of the Squadron/Signal Panzer Colors books (despite their mistakes)... the original plates have been damaged/lost and those books can never be re-published. If you see some at the vendors' tables at a show, grab 'em up.

Hi All,
I found the list of errors that was compiled on Panzer Colors, I believe they were written by Bruce Culver himself back on the original AFV News site. They are good books in general and have awesome pictures. For that alone, they are priceless. Get them when you can find them at reasonable prices. Hope that helps.
Regards,
Georg
