Hi Gang,
after a long and controversal discussion (typical for Germany), the governemnt decided to assist the Peshmerga soldiers in Kurdistan in their struggle against the Islamic State militia.
The following list of equipment was just released by German MOD.
http://www.bundeswehr.de/portal/a/bwde/!ut/p/c4/NYs9D4JAEET_0S2XmCB0Io0WFDaAjTlggxvvg6yL1_jjvSucSV7zZuAOqd58aDVCwRsLA4wz1VNUU1xQmZfsaC2-VUQSZHzIEx166PMxDebgUTIFvVDiykYCqy2w2Gx25mQULTAWum10Wfyjv1V3PffHQ1W2l-YGm3OnH6b64nc!/
Might give some ideas for future figure and diorama builds.
Cheers
H.-H.
BTW it`s interesting that we still have some G3 in storage.

I saw a video with some ISIS fighters in a group a few of them were carrying MP-40s! Could these have come from Syrian Army stockpiles? I guess they'll use anything that will shoot.
My German isn't great but from the list it looks like they need all of it and more.

Your right there I thought the G3 was well out of use! It is quite a list though.

Hans, thanks for the list; my ex-wife (she is German) heard this and was astonished. I was wondering what 'heavy' weapons Germany was sending.

It is surprising that the german government spreads these informations.
Our government says they will help too Irak against jihadists, but they say that they don't want to communicate the type of supplied equipment.

In 2012 Free Syrian Army fighters raided a Syrian Army stockpile of about 5000 MP44's!

@Paul Anstee there still some G3 ZF in use as Designated Marksmanship Rifle.
@ Duane I hardly believe that the Peshmerga will get some "heavy" equipment, since heavy equipment needs training. All I heard that some Peshmerga will come to the Infantry Warfare School at Hammelburg to get a basic training with the MILAN missile. And I still wonder what kind of equipment/weapons aer at the hand of the IS fighters. All I saw was some footage of captured Iraqi M113 and the usual Technicals. They main concern of our government is that the Kurdish figthers will on day use these weapons in a Kurdish liberation war, e.g. aganst Turkey.
Strange times we live in.

According to Wikipedia the Peshmerga seem to have anumber of heavy weapons. Most of there small arm are of Soviet origin like AK-47/74, RPK, DshK and RPG-7, but also H&K G3 and MP5.
Also M16 and M82 Antimaterial rifles.

The US needs to get serious about confronting ISIS, IS, ISIL, whatever their name of the day is. More weapons are on the way from the US as well.

I did a quick Google search and found that the Peshmerga have a impressive array of vehicles. Various Technicals with m.g. and rocketlaunchers, M1025, M1114 and M1151 HMMWV plus T-55 and T-62. And the perhaps most dangerous weapon of all:

Hans, thanks for the additional information. I was stationed at Bad Kissingen from 1979-80 and went to Hammelburg af few times; I liked the town and did visit the infantry school there. This was the prisoner of war camp that had Patton's son-in-law when he sent Task Force Baum to try and get him....
Robert, thanks for the you tube on the MP44. I wonder where they get the ammo for that weapon?

Unfortunately, we don't seem to have a clear policy as to exactly how we might confront ISIS/ISIL. Two dead American citizens and the administration appears to be twiddling its collective thumbs.

I wonder how many WWII (German) weapons are still in use around the world. The MP44's and MG42's in Syria I know of, and I have one photo of what looks like a Kettenkrad from I believe Chad. Anybody know of more examples?

Hi Robbert,
I remember a newsreport from the Balkan Wars. One of the fractions used a 2cm Flakvierling 38 against the other fractions. On another report, a Serbian warehouse was inspected by US Troops. One saw all kinds of captured Wehrmacht equipment including 8,8 cm Flak 36. As for ammo, in my county, just 10 km from my home, a large ammo cache of Wehrmacht and US munitions was discovered during construction works. Some sources speak of up to 400 kg(880 lb). of small arms rounds, AT mines, mortar rounds and WP grenades. Just tonight, one of the WP detomated and covered the vicinity with a thick cloud of smoke. Even 70 years after the war ended, there a lot of b...shit around.
