Hi Gang,I post this as Airfix have recently been putting a Wish list /Suggestion section on their website, being primarily an armour modeller I do cross over to dark side with "wingie thingies" where they crossover with a particular era I`m interested in.
What I wished for was a C-47 in 1/35th scale and suggested that this would be a great kit for modellers of all genres (lets face it,who wouldn't want to do a D-Day gooney bird !).
I am hoping for a few replies to see if I`m right (and perhaps a few of you will push this idea Airfix`s way to bump it up the list !).

Wow! a 1/35 scale Dak. That would be a sight to behold. You're talking a wingspan of nearly 3 feet

Can't imagine Airfix would do something in 1/35th scale - the only 1/35th kits they have ever issued were the old Peerless/Max moulds of things like the CMPs and Bedford

they have a fine history of 1/24th birds, several new,
but I'd like some 1/48th C-47's, Horsas', Hadrians, Hamilcars....
and in 1/35th please

Sorry, but 1/35 aircraft are an abomination! :-)
I don't build dioramas so they have no appeal to me at all.
If I want an aircraft, I want it in 1/48. :-)

How many 1/35 Cessnas or Fiesler Storchs have you seen built up? We know that Hobby Boss or someone is coming out with a Horsa. I recall a DFS 230 too. Let's see how they'll sell -- or will they be a bust like the other 1/35 fixed wing a/c.
Sorry to be a pessimist but a singular post, trying to gin up enthusiasm for a 1/35 C-47 wouldn't move me in the slightest if I were a decision maker. 1/32 actually has some proven marketshare. 1/35 is a black hole as far as I can tell.

A better poll would be how many people think this thread should go in the General Modeling forum? Besides a very loose tie in with dioramas, what does this subject have to do with armor/afvs?

I think it's a valid question, just as it would be to ask about a Horsa or a Hamilcar. As a dio builder I'd rather see half kits of said aircraft. If the 1/35 horsa ever happens, i'd be forced to chop it up to make several manageable dios.

Gents, whether big is your thing or not, 1/32nd scale aircraft are a hot growth area in our hobby. Zoukei-Mura, Tamiya, and HK Models have all brought out large planes recently that have sold very well (Tamiya has been making 32scale kits for many years).
The question is whether modelers would plunk down their jack for a C-47. I think they would.

I'd love to see it, a 35th scale Skytrain. But that's it: just to SEE it. I'd never buy the thing. I also second the B-17, B-24, B-25, B-29, B-52, etc. And I add to that:
- P-51B/C/D
- C-130
- Howard Hughes' Spruce Goose (dam that'd be a big *** model kit...) and...
- Boeing B747 (that'd also be huge)
- Airbus A-380 (that'd be an even huge-r model kit! 7 foot (225 cm) wingspan in 35th scale!) and...
- Antonov An-225 Mriya (that would be gigantic. 8 foot (252 cm) wingspan!)

I would argue that if you do the C47, you have to do the ju52-

As others have noticed the interest in aircraft is in 1/32nd. That being said the difference in scale is quite small and you would be able to pose the two scales together fairly comfortably.

How about this-
If you don't agree with the topic or have no interest, don't post.
And if 1/32 and 1/35 are so close, why do so many people on this site take so much time to scratch build these incredible SCALE ACCURATE models?

I've chopped up a 1/32 Revell HE-162 as cargo. In 1/32 it's about 28.3cm long. In 1/35, it should be 25.9cm long.
In the back of a GMC 2.5 ton truck, chopped into pieces, it's not noticeable... but in many circumstances, it would be. That's a 9% diff in size. Would you take a Sherman -9% in length? Not if you could help it.

So a C47 in 1/35 is not a stretch and it would be a good center piece for a dio

Don't forget that there are quite a few helicopter models in 1/35, including two CH-47 Chinooks (A and D models), Hinds, UH-60s, etc. While a C-47 is big, the Chinook is bigger--it is longer than the Skytain's wingspan. No way I'd have room to display either of them, but there is clearly a market for big a$$ models out there. After all, for those of you who scoff at the suggestion, how big is Revell's 1/48 B-1? It's even larger than either the 1/35 Chinook or a hypothetical 1/35 C-47.

Let us talk practicalities here. The preferred scale for big aircraft is 1/32. Aircraft modellers who constitute the main market would not be interested in 1/35. Certainly there are some 1/35 aircraft out there but it is a small niche market. It also looks to likely to remain that way in the armour world as well; 1/35 is the main scale and 1/32 armour an esoteric side show (if indeed it exists). There is not enough demand in either field for the bigger companies to invest in the tooling for what will likely generate marginal sales. That being the case what is the solution? It is possible that some cottage manufacturer will produce a vac-form or a resin kit. However, both would probably sell in even smaller numbers - the former because modellers shy away from vac-forms and the latter because of cost. Or one can combine models from both scales. Certainly these models do have a difference in scale but a 9% difference is not that significant in a well done diorama if the modeller does a good job. One has to work within the constraints of the real world not a pleasant fantasy. Of course if you desire a 1/35 C47 then there is also the option of scratch building but once again it is not an easy or accessible option to most. That unfortunately, is how things are.

Hello David,
Yup, I know about the B-17 in 1/32nd and would love to get one.
The challenge that I think a lot of people have with 1/32nd scale aircraft in a 1/35th scale dio is that doesn't look quite right.
For years I've wanted to do a 1/35th armored dio with a fighter or bomber wrecked in the scene, but FW-190 and ME-109 just didn't look right. I would have to place it some distance away from the armor to make it look somewhat right. It's that forced perspective off balance thing. I guess you can pull it off with a "fly by" scene.
The only scales were you can use both armor and aircraft in the same scene are 1/48th and 1/72nd. So I think it's time 1/35th got in to the game with the aircraft market.
That's my 2.5 cents.
See ya in the funnies................

I was gonna say that!
1/32nd would be good for a C47/DC3 as there are a lot of birds in this scale.
Europe, especially Germany & Poland have a long tradition of paper models in 1/33 & 1/25th, so the market should be there?
Mini-Art had plans for a C-47, Horsa & Tante Ju, but only the Horsa will be progressed, by someone else, I forget who...
AND I want ALL the above in 1/48th please!!

The title of this thread is "A Straw Poll . . ." FYI JoePanzer, that means a tally of votes or opinions on both sides of the question. If nothing else, it ought to signal to the original poster that the manufacturers' hesitancy to produce aircraft kits in 1/35 is quite justified.

Because they are interested in those subjects. I'm sure you have noted as well the stark absence of scratch-built aircraft models to go with the tanks.

Kurt Laughlin-
FYI The abscence of scratch built aircraft in dios is probably due to the fact that its a b*tch and is a huge outlay of cash. I believe the original question posed was to try to prod a manufacturer into producing a few kits to "span the gap" between 1/35 armor and aircraft-for the purpose of integration of such in progressing this hobby. Apologies for any offense on opinions.
I'm just amazed that there are so many responses of "The difference wouldn't be that noticable". It is a scale hobby right?
