Recently I came across a series of KV-2 images I just had to try and model. I'd never built an upside-down tank before this seemed like a perfect time to try it.
These are the images I came across:
And here is my take on the scene:
The tank is the Trumpeter KV-2, detailed with Aber photo etch and fenders, and master club tracks. The figures are from Stalingrad and Alpine miniatures, a couple of which received hornet heads.
Hosted by Jacques Duquette
Damn it, Pavel, where did you learn to drive?

The only thing I don't like about this diorama is the name. It should be "where the @#!$ did you learn to drive?"

Great interpretation of a historical photo! The dio looks wonderful, and those figures work perfectly. Where did you get them (or did you sculpt them)?

A very unique and extremely well executed scene Jason. Very neat scene. Your figures are nicely done, and add a sence of action to an otherwise static build. Cool dio.

Thanks!
The two figures being yelled at are unmodified stalingrad miniatures figures.
The yelling commander is a Tank miniatures figure with his arm and head replaced by a hornet head in a Tank miniatures helmet.
The two confused standing figures are alpine miniatures, one of whom has his arm replaced.
The guy climbing out of the tank escape hatch is actually a stalingrad german figure from their Waffen-SS panzer crew set, with a replacement head and his torso resculpted to change it from german overalls to early war russian (redo of the collar and the pockets).

You performed a fantastic execution of representing the photo with your model. The figures look great and really add depth and life to the diorama. The diorama's message is pretty neat.
It's nice how everything came together in terms of kitbashing the figures and the overall scene.

This is great hahaha. You took some of the more somber/serious figures and turned it into a humorous scene, well done. Love it.

What a fantastic way to feature the real star of tracked vehicles - the suspension and tracks themselves! We modelers go to great lengths to get them just right and then they are tucked away below, grinding in the dirt while the upper hull, turret, stowage and crew get the spotlight! Bravo! !

Thanks! I truly believe adding at least one well-painted figure adds a lot to any model. I honest can't recall the last model I built that didn't have at least one.

Looks excellent. One thing I'd mention though is that the underside of tanks is generally pretty mucky and shows a definite streaking fore and aft caused by the belly scraping along the earth periodically. There isn't therefore much paint evident although this example may be fairly recently built and issued.
Anyway, I like the diorama a lot.

Entertainingly, a little after I finished this diorama a friend at the local AMPS meet showed me a book with images of this exact KV-2 after the germans found it and it has a picture of the underside. While it is remarkably clean, no mud buildup, it did have a bit more streaking towards the back end of the bottom. I've been tempted to try adding that, but since everything is already fixed to the base, its a big risk to add it now.
