Dear All,
I've composed a list of the Item #'s marked as "Discontinued" on the Tamiya USA website. I assume this means they are no longer producing this kit or making it available to dealers. I'm curious if anyone knows if Tamiya will reissue any of these or not. I encourage speculation as well. Some of these are just sad, unless they are planning to re-engineer and reissue them.

I'm also curious how many people have these kits in their stashes still and in what numbers.

89970 - US Modern 4x4 (HMMWV)
89755 - 1/4T 4x4 Light Vehicle (Jeep)
32539 - King Tiger "Porsche"
32536 - King Tiger "Production"
32537 - US M26 Pershing
32528 - British Cromwell
32527 - SU-122
32525 - StuG III Ausf G "Saukopf"
32524 - Pz.Kpfw III Ausf L
32522 - Jagdpanther
32520 - Panther
32518 - Pz.Kpfw IV Ausf J
32515 - T-34/76
32511 - Hetzer
32507 - StuG III Ausf B

I have a Cromwell waiting for the right campaign to come along. To find something optimistic about your somber post, perhaps this means Tamiya will give us new quarter scale offerings.

Here is hoping,

I would be willing to let them go.

Most model manufacturers have a habit of offering a run of kits, selling them out and then reissuing them at a later time. Sometimes they'll have new decals or new figures, other times new variants.

There is a base line which never goes away but the more esoteric stuff comes and goes like the tide. Look at the larger scale 1/35 cousins of these kits and you'll see what I mean. The SU-122 is a sterling example.

It's always been this way so I guess you snooze, you lose. Nothing ever goes away forever you may have to wait years for the next reissue but it never goes away for ever.

Maybe in twenty years we'll get the 2000's classic quarter scale edition like we're getting the classic 1970's re-issue now.

There's always a chance for a reissue since they have the molds, which is a companies biggest expense. The one problem I see with some of them is that they came with the metal lower hulls. Considering the number of people who complained about them, Tamiya may forego a reissue of any of those.

I've always felt it is a shame 1/48 armor has never really built a larger following.

All,
I love these replies. I'm not really looking to build out my stash more or find any of these (at this time). I am really just curious about how many of these are lingering and how people feel about the discontinuations and chances for re-issue.
I agree about both the metal hulls and the larger issue of getting more penetration for 48th scale armor.

I'm building the Stug B for the Stug campaign right now, and I have a PzIII L in the stash that I plan to build. I'm also hoping that some of these kits get reissued at some point. The PzIV would be a no-brainer since they already have the hull in plastic.

I asked Tamiya Customer Service about this a wile ago and got this:

Dear Mr. ,

thank you for your email, and please accept our apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

We are sorry to inform you that both of the kits you enquired about have been discontinued and are no longer in production. At present, the best advice we can give is to contact our official agent in Australia and enquire as to whether they have any stock remaining. Their contact details are as follows:

Toy Traders (Sales) Pty Ltd.
Tel.: 02-9749-1733)
Fax: 02-9749-1032
email: [email protected]

Thank you once again for taking the time to contact us here in Japan, and we apologize again that we could not provide a more positive answer on this occasion. We hope that you will continue to enjoy the other products available in 1/48 and other scales.

Yours sincerely,

Bear in mind that a production run of plastic kits sufficient for a couple of years' worth of sales can be run off in a few days, so technically, nearly all kits are "out of production" at any given time. These molds are assets, and once they are paid off, they are pure profit centers. As long as there is a market for kits in that scale, Tamiya will continue to reissue these models periodically. Indeed, far from withholding products from the market, they have been condemned for continuing to reissue ancient models that are seriously substandard compared to modern kits, like their 1/35th scale Panther Ausf. A and M41 Walker Bulldog kits.

Howdy Y'all

I have 9 or 10 of these kits in the stash or partially-built pile. The little Krupp truck was re-released with a 3.7cm Pak so that's encouraging. I'm not worried, I found the SU-122 in an Estate Sale at the LHS last year. The kits are around and someday they will be re-released, hopefully with re-engineered parts and hulls.

These are my favorite kits, just wish I had more time to build them. I'm considering selling off the 1/35 stash and spend the rest of my life building the existing 1/48 stash plus new releases that are still coming out.

Take care,
Don "Lakota"
