Welcome, Jeff. Glad to have you join us. At 1/700 I'd say your eyes are definitely going to get a challenge. Are you planning on going whole hog with PE, etc. or keep it just challenging enough?

I picked up some 1/700 Japanese railing and ladders PE.
SO going to try and add some, but not sure how much....
Plus I plan to read on how Kostas does water and try my hand at doing it also...First time for everything...

This is why I really enjoy this site and the builds...
I have done and am doing more things than I have ever tried before...... Really helps build up your modeling techniques.

@Jeff, Nice selection for your build. Unfortunately my eyes are too bad for 1/700 scale so I stick with the 1/350.

@John, thanks for the comments. I was a track builder for years but the challenge presented with ships has me hooked.

that being said, here are some updates with the USS Heermann.

I don't remember if I mentioned this earlier but after starting the build I decided to change the subject of my build I am still using the Tamiya kit but the subject will now be the USS Heermann DD 532 instead of the USS Fletcher DD 445.

The Heermann was a square bridge Fletcher class destroyer. Here she is with updated PE.





I changed out the forward 20mm gun tubs to the 40mm gun tubs.



and had to modify the aft mid deck 40mm gun tub.



I am using the Trumpeter USS Sullivans kit for some of the required parts.

After filling in some gaps I added some detail to the escape trunks.



and finally began painting the hull. In 1944 the USS Heerman was painted in Measure 32/24D





I will be painting the deck tomorrow.

And yes, I know what you mean, my eyes started going at about 50 and every year need stronger and stronger glasses to do my fun work...I also have 3 or 4 1/350 ships in my stash as well. I had actually started the Trumpeter CV-14 Tico about 1.5 years ago........and Yes I have ALL the PE for it plus multiple extra AC which takes a lot of time and effort.My wife's grandfather was on this ship throughout WWII.
I also have a few older revel kits of the USS Randall and Burleigh, (I wish I had the Seminole.... These other ships are so I can make my fathers WWII ships USS Blue Ridge AGC2 or the Merrick AK97 at end of war and occupation service.
My goal is to get good enough at ships so I can one day build the early 80's New Jersey, (which I tried for my last 4 years to get on (82-86) and then the 1/96 Constitution with full crew in water.. :

But I will start posting images of this little thing this weekend as I start this build.......

Coming along nicely, dealing with PE in that scale, man you are a braver man than I. Anxious to see more.

Still plugin away with my dio. Any of you guys have an old set of Tamiyas Japanese infantry to sell. Would like 2 more figures for it but will add them down the road if I have to. A bit of putty and I'm off to the painting stage. Might be able to get some pics up tomarrow.

I think I might have a set of them in the stash, I seem to remember seeing them a week or two ago. If they're there you can have them. SWMBO has been after me to thin out the stash, and she don't know about the Horsa I have on pre-order.

And your other half wont hear about the Horsa from me. Was tring to figure how big a base I'd need for a dio with it and just can't fit it anywhere. No worries on being late to the party, glad to have you join us. Nice in-progress pics. Word of warning on the chaplain, lining up the decals for his vestments is going to make you want to rip your hair out (my advice shave your head before attempting). Would have made much more sense to do it as a pre-spaced sheet like the camouflage decals you can buy. I'd also forget the red cross brassard, corpsmen didn't wear them.

@Bob, I haven't forgotten about the figures. Just haven't remembered where I put them when I ran across them last. I can remember stuff from 5th grade like it was yesterday, but ask me what I had for lunch yesterday...

John I don't intend to use the decals. I found a site for clerical vestments. I also am aware that Corpsmen didn't wear red crosses

Hi Doc. No problem there. If you do locate them with enough time it would be great, if not, I can always add them latter. Base is finished, now the fun part. All 5 Japanese figures and 8 Marines. Never tried so many figures on such a small base with the bunker and supporting gear/essentials too. But the nice thing, It will very well show the very small atoll with our 6,ooo plus troops who occupied and invaded it. Over 6 thousand killed and more wounded in 2 1/2 days of combat. I'm pulling out all the stops to show the absolute carnage that mankind can inflict upon its self. Viewer discretion should be advised on this one.

finally finished the figures So I can call this project complete I hope you like it

I really enjoyed seeing your dio. You did a great job portraying a somber moment before entering combat. My hat is off to you sir.

Jeff, she is coming along splendidly. Very nice clean PE work. As I mentioned before, I am jealous of the ability to work in 1/700 but somewhat glad, if I could build 1/700 my stash would be enormous. I just recently purchased the Fujimi IJN Shokaku and the IJN Fuso. I can't wait to dive into those two kits...

I should have some updated for the USS Heermann soon.

everyones work is coming along great. Cant wait to see more.

Welcome to the campaign! Interested to see how that one is for a build. Roughly a month left to go now. How are everyone's builds progressing?

My build is stuck in dry dock with the ship workers on an extended lunch due to completing requirements... hopefully that will change in the next couple of weeks.

That is a very unusual and not often seen prayer diorama, awesome work it looks great.

How is it going? well, let's see. The usual putty and paint. All the requiered gear for the time era, time spending on looking through the spare parts bin, unbuilt kit kit bashing, kit bashing and wondering how I'm gonna build that figure later without that arm or head, arguing with the carpet monster. finding parts, losing said parts, oh, and finding said parts here and there and losing them again. Late night painting and realizing that the can of clear coat that you just sprayed a shot of over a figure was really primer. 17 books bookmarked and lying open in piles all over, waiting to topple over in a 1/1 scale earthquake. How is it going? Oh the usual cussing, burning to the god of styrene, last moment run to the L.H.S. to replace said burnt offering and coffee and more coffee. Hair pulling and wondering why I do this to myself! Really, just having a lot of fun as usual and when something does work out well, just happy to have pulled it off again. Good lord, I'd be bored to death without this stuff. Thanks Al. Gotta love the smell of virgin styrene in the morning.
