Hi guy's.. Was wondering if any of you have had any experience with the AK Interactive FAQ 2 modeling book and what your thoughts are on this manual?

Craig..

I thought it was pretty useful when I was first getting into using the enamel weathering products. It was written when Mig was still with AK, so they mainly use AK products. But I like the enamel weathering products, and the manual has some great step-by-step tutorials. I like it that it shows you different techniques for different situations (like different techniques for different track types).

If you're interested in buying one, I wouldn't mind selling mine at a discount.

Along with the Spanish books /FAQ, Color modulation, Painting guide for AFVs etc/ I have the TankArt books as well /1 and 3/.
There is no need to buy all these books, if you want to try out any of the painting techniques. Just type Mig Jimenez in YouTube. Almost all his DVDs /even the Acrylic technique DVD/ and modelling show seminars are available. Watching these videos will guide you how to use acrylics.
You can decide which root you go later on, after testing different methods. I hate the smell of enamels, so prefer Mike Rinaldi's oil rendering. It does not mean that oils are any better than enamel weathering products, just a personal taste.
Fyi there is no such as acrylics rendering, due to the nature of the paint. You can still do something similar called layering. Again personal preference.
There are some interesting products like True Earth Transparent filters, Ammo Washable colors. Technically none of them are acrylics, but waterbased resins.
Whatever technique you prefer, there are brilliant books and paints available for any. As soon you try you will see if you love or hate it.

BTW
The best structured How to book I ever bought is 'Airplanes in scale, the greatest guide'. Not AFV, but a perfectly edited one.

It does have a great Dio section and how to. You learn a lot about composition and using different substances to create different effects. And Mig also has some chapters on painting stowage (like Jerry cans, MGs, tarps, etc.)

Hey ya... JanosNagy thanks for the input! I will and have checked out some of the videos online, Youtube etc. They are great and I'm glad there available but I'm old school and like to have hard copies in my possession, books and videos for my library. Force of habit I guess but it also allows me to sit one of my grandchildren down in a chair and say here you want to learn this- READ A BOOK and give me that damn cell phone for a couple of hours and we will discuss what you've learned when your through! Grandpa has a mean (love) streak! LOL..

Your welcome.
I am familiar with this habit. I often take these book with me into the bed. For some funny reason, my wife does not evaluate this habit as an 'old school', rather 'possessed'

Few tips on acrylics /which I did not find in the books/
- Always put an agitator ball into the jar /stainless steel/, it will make the shaking, blending the paint easier. Acrylics are very sensitive to be consistently mixed.
- Acrylic primers work completely different way than lacquer primers. Vallejo primer is polyurethane, AK/AMMO is polymer. They are less aggressive an do not bite plastic, like lacquer ones do.
Vallejo is behaving as a kind of latex, tricky to sand. AK/AMMO is more forgiving primers, can be sanded. All of them work better if you let them cure properly, for 48 hours.
- I like Vallejo paints for hand-painting. But they don't work for me on a bare plastic, some primer is needed.
- The difference between Turpentine and White spirit /for oil rendering/ is the smell and the drying time. White spirit smells less and dries faster.
- Pigments are also an excellent products /Mike Rinaldi using them in TankArt as well/. You can actually paint with them, adding some thinner. The best is MIG Production, fine and rich in pigments. AK/AMMO pigments not bad either, but next to a MIG Production pigment you feel the difference.

Choosing the right brand/type of a product for your taste, saves a lot of time.

ps
I recommend reading TankArt 1, Panther winter wash chapter. Real art what Mike Rinaldi does there.

Hello again JanosNagy! I concur, I often take a good read to bed with me lol.. I have made the choice of Vallejo acrylics as my starting point as you might have read from my other posts but I am very open minded when it comes to different or optional choices that have proven successful in other mediums or by other modelers/authors! To be narrowed minded as with most things in life tends to stump ones possibilities for success and experience in things and I will most likely implement a diverse set of mediums/processes to obtain results that I'm happy with! I am of the mindset to take it all in and find what suits me best and with the help of others such as yourself I can reduce the learning curve to acceptable levels and reduce an excess of frustration!!

Thanks to you and all for your continued input!

Hello guy's! Haven't posted for awhile, mostly because the TaxMan hasn't coughed up my moo-la so I haven't been able to purchase much but I have been able to send for Tank Art volumes 2 & 3 hopefully they will be here next week! I am having a hard time finding volume 1. Seems I waited to long and it's now out of print (bummer) I found one across the pond but the shipping cost is large! Just wondering if anyone knows of a source in the USA that still has copies?

Thanks!
Craig

Craig, have you checked Michael Rinaldi's site? I missed out on Vol 1 as well, but was able to get the 2nd edition Vol 1 late last year. As I understand this edition has additional content from the first one. Tat

Hey Tat..Yes I checked out Michaels site but he's all out of volume 1 and it won't be reprinted. Michael has been kind enough to even personally respond to me about the book. I found one volume across the pond and will grab that as soon as I can!!
