Been enamored for some time by both the hard cab CCKW and the Piper L-4. Finding these reference photos has pushed me over the top. Now I HAVE to build this combo

I started with a stock Tamiya LWB CCKW:

Up to this point I have more or less built this vehicle OOB however I have omitted the open cab, open cab floorboard, cab back wall and I have cut off the open cab sidewalls that were attached to the engine cowl.

Whenever I can pick up an Italeri CCKW closed cab water tanker on the cheap I do so. The hard cab is close to excellent and unlike other manufacture's kits this cab is in the correct proportions.

So from the Italeri kit I picked up the floor board, cab back wall, seats and cab roof/windshield/hood molding.

The front edge of the floorboard will require some slight modification to fit into the Tamiya firewall. Also the dash board will need to be narrowed just slightly to fit into the Tamiya cowl.

As you can see, the Italeri hard cab is nearly a drop in substitution for the Tamiya product.

In this photo the closed cab combo is only dry fitted to the Tamiya chassis.

In another thread John Hale took a slightly different course by substituting the entire Italeri cab for the HobbyBoss product.

The only modification required to the stock Italeri cab/fender combo is to cut out the cast in place engine oil pan of the Italeri part to make clearance for the full engine offered by HobbyBoss.

This is a very clean build on John's part!

Photo and model by John Hale

p.s. I think next time I am going to go this route and use the entire Italeri cab.

I felt I needed more research info on exactly what the framing should look like on the L-4 when the wings are removed:

This was obviously a not common cargo for these guys as they posed for a photo as proof to show people

What brand is the L-4? Bronco? I'm just about finishing up a 1/48 Piper L-4 for the Operation Market Garden campaign.

Sorry I guess I should have defined where the 1/35th scale Piper was coming from:

I imagine it was more an unlikely cargo for the photographer. The photogs were always looking for something a bit unusual to document.

Hi Michael,

Very nice project. Definitely, the 1/35th scale Piper is already a nice build if alone. On the truck is really awesome.

Great idea. Go ahead...

Cheers

What about a rear view for a change (I'm not sure this one is a L-4 though...) ?

2 more period pics here (I guess the plane is an earlier J3)

Looks like other vehicles could be used as well (Korean War picture) :

I'll post the last one in the other related thread if you prefer

Some interesting L-4 markings here (if needed ) :

Some progress accomplished: - the truck is nearly done though the cab is being a bit fiddly. (My fault)

Working on the cockpit of the L-4 and dreading how I am going to paint the ribs on the window glass.

A couple of added details that may never be seen again:

Quilted headliner for the cab.

And scribed Evergreen plastic as a rubber floormat.

Someone beat me to the punch with a beautifully rendered CCKW with Piper load!

(Modeler Unknown)

Beautifully done!

Not sure you would ever see a Piper in D-Day striping loaded this way as these aircraft were being brought to France post D-Day. However it certainly makes for a more interesting model!

Nice work, Stripes could be possible, as full stripes were worn for a while, until August for some aircraft.

AOP's like the Piper did have the top stripes removed pretty rapidly after mid-June for camo reasons though.

- BUMP -

No further progress on my model as I have been distracted into building a 1/35th scale German Storch.

Does anyone have any good photo reference on what the wing stem structure looks like on the Piper when the wing is removed from the aircraft? I seem to find quite a few photos of the canopy structure, wings removed but little/nothing on what the wing base itself looks like.
