Got my second Sherman kit today it's the old Tamiya 35190 kit and I want to do Hurricane as it was in operation Cobra.
I have been looking at some pictures and reading some post off other sites and a few have said that Hurricane had no pistol port?
But the photo of it off loading in Normandy it looks like it does have a pistol port,I think the bags hanging above obscures the view.
I maybe wrong it might just be a shadow and I don't know date the turret was built.

If you believe the colour plate is accurate, then yes to a pistol port - http://www.tanks-encyclopedia.com/ww2/US/M4_Sherman.php (7th tank down)
Bison decals sheet also shows it with a port - http://www.angelfire.com/pro/bison/72009.html
Looking at your original photo I'd have to agree with the above.

I believe what you are seing there is the straps from the musette bags and a dark stain. This tank has applique added yet has no turret cheek applique indicating it has the mid production turret with cast in cheek armour which had no pistol port. The picture here does not equate to the real position of the port being too low which is why i think it is a shadow and strap.

How can you tell there is no turret cheek applique armour given it would be on the other side?

There is another photo of Hurricane getting an engine change shown from the other side. I did a search on ML for all the previous threads about it. The photo in large format can be found here:

Ah, that makes sense then. With that photo, I would have to concur it was not fitted with a pistol port.

Al thanks for that
It's always best to find these things out before I make a start on the build and luckily the Tamiya kit does not require me to fill in any holes.
Just one more thing I would like to know, when it was repainted with black camouflage they painted over the H2 turret numbers would the white star still be on top of the turret?
Thanks for your time
Karl

In fact it does have the relocated Cast Ckerk armor with no pistol port. Hurricane also has the late sharp nose differential (drawing # not available to me at the moment).
I just finished this tank using Tasca parts with a few TMD parts thrown in with the Star decal sheet.

It is unlikely the camouflage extends across the top of the vehicle and very unlikely that the star would have been overpainted o nthe turret roof. Hull stars are another matter altogether. Note that the Tamiya kit has upswept bogie trailing arms which should be horizontal types on "Hurricane".

Hi Karl,
There is a pic on the web that shows the engine change, and it looks as if the black bands definitely obscure the "H 2" markings. However, it looks like the shipping data was also removed, so the tank might have had a respray of OD before the black was added. Either way, the black bands get rid of the main problem with the Tamiya kit - the "H 2" should be yellow, not white! (I found that out AFTER I finished mine, of course...)
My build can be seen here.

Just looked at your build and it looks great, why don't you just paint over the white decals with yellow.
Again thanks

Hello Karl,
Yes, the top kit is from the 70's/80's era, my first armor kit. The second kit is the re-issue from the 90's, 1994 I think, I'd have to look at the mold mark inside the hull. Both have been trashed since the photo was taken, parts kits now.
See ya in the funnies.................

Hi Karl,
I answer to most things, as long as they can be shouted in mixed company!
I thought about masking & painting the letters, but couldn't work up the nerve...
(I think Bison did a correct decal set. Or is it Archer?)

Hey Brian!
I have the same fridge! Kenmore Elite, right? The magnets and drawings that came with mine are a little different, though. We got the 1 year old granddaughter option.

To Roy,
Yes those are M4A3's, I was trying to get any idea of the kit Karl was speaking of, close by no cigar type thing. The M4 Tamiya kit I've not had the pleasure of building yet since it goes in and out of stock at my LHS faster then I build what I've alright got.
To Matthew,
The frig is long gone my friend. Sold it around 1 year ago with my washer/dryer and stove all same color as a combo package.
My apologizes Karl.

A few progress photo's
Tried to simulate thickened cheek armor,it will look better when I get my bottle of Mr surfacer.
I ordered some cast numbers and Mr surfacer 2 weeks ago and looks like they where lost in the post,so ill have to wait to do the cast look on the model when they arrive.
Cheers
