My history is mainly in gaming, and I have painted many miniatures in my time. I always stayed away from large scale modelling because I didn't have the room to store or display models, but I am finally at a point in my life where I can.
So, I decided to start with a project that interested me, and keep a running "blog" of my progress, hoping that people would be willing to comment and assist through the process. I also believe this will keep me motivated through the process and (hopefully) avoid some amount of frustration.
I am jumping into this world with the Dragon 6303 Kingtiger. I realize this is a pretty big first step, but I think with my history of miniatures, I should be able to handle it if I take my time.
Here is the box:

And here is my worktable with the parts laid out:

I started yesterday with step 1 and gluing some of the wheels together. So, a couple of noob questions:
1) In the instructions, it points out parts of the wheels with a paint color number. Is that suggesting that I paint now, before assembling, or is that just a way to show as you go what it will be painted down the road?
2) I am a bit confused about the tracks. Some of the research I did stated that there were "Magic Tracks", but the only "Magic Tracks" in the box are 9 tracks that look to be glued on the turret. The actual tracks that will be used are 1-piece soft plastic. I have seen that a lot of people have purchased after-market tracks for this kit. Why? Should I?
I appreciate all of your help, and look forward to your feedback. If there is anything you think I should know for the next step, please don't hesitate to tell me.
Thanks!
