What's a Private Message?? Well we have had so many new users and returning folks who have been away I thought I would cover this little topic again. This site has a system to send "private messages" (like emails) to other users on the site. In the forum this works (when logged in and registered) by clicking on the "PM" button under the user's message that you wish to send a comment to. You can also send a PM from the users profile page.
Once you send a PM the envelope above the country flags and next to the Greetings message will turn white and the little stamp will flash red. If you have sound, Homer Simpson will also say "Mail Call - Come and get it" everytime you hit a new page (unfortunately).
You can ALWAYS access your private mail messages by clicking on the envelope (greyed out or not). That way you can read old messages until you delete them. PLEASE DELETE THEM OCCASIONALLY. Otherwise they will build up and I will have to delete all of them for us.
ATTENTION
I will be doing a database purge of ALL read messages on Monday at roughly 6pm. Please save any information you may have in stored private messages so you won't loose it.
This ends your Armorama public service announcement.

I try to delete them as I'm done. Some I've saved, but I have fewer than 5 messages in the PM folder.

Rob,
That's good - Thanks. I just checked and there are 1180 private messages in the database. A little more than I would expect! lol
Hopefully this will clear out some of those.

How many are read vs. unread? There may be a few casual visitors that have unread messages since they are unaware or haven't come back.

Hi Jim and Rob:
I like you: usually try to keep no more than 3 to 5 letters in my box at one time but occassionally it will build up to about 10, and then I will go in and save the ones that i want and clear the others, But your announcement was apppreciated.
Thanks

It appears the vast majority (like 90% are read messages). If no one objects I am just going to delete them via the database. And even if you do object I probably still will.
So if you got info there you need you had best copy and paste it to some other file.
I'll ammend the post up top to reflect this.
Cheers,
Jim

If you start deleteing all the messages in people's mailboxes, then someone who has been out of the net for a few days (like gone to Spain or running from wildfires) may have his messages deleted prior to being able to read them.If no one objects I am just going to delete them via the database. And even if you do object I probably still will.
Also, I get several requests for information via PM daily and usually leave them in the mailbox until I take the pictures/scan the instructions/mail the figures. After the action is completed, I delete the messages.

Rob,
Well to your first point I wouldn't be deleting anything that hasn't been read yet. Only the ones where the read flag = 1 (meaning it's been clicked on). On the second point I do the same thing sometimes in terms of reading and then getting back to them. What I may try to do is delete all read messages from a certain date back. Like everything from May 15, 2002 back to the start of the site would get nixed. That should solve the issue of mail on-hold.

I guess this topic goes to me... My mailbox is packed with PMs I haven't deleted, sorry about that Jim... I'll browse trough it right away and clean it up.
I just hope people would see this tread and clean their mailboxes by themself, so that you don't have to delete all of it...

Ok...so the deletion didn't quite go as planned. And I was stupid and didn't back up the table before trying to selectively delete some by the timestamp date. I still don't know how some unread/read newer mail got axed but I am pretty sure they did.
Needless to say if you sent someone a PM recently and your fairly sure (by their lack of response) that they didn't read it. You might want to resend your message.
Sorry for the mixup. Hopefully I won't have to attempt this again as everyone will be deleting old messages regularly.
Thanks,
Jim

Anders,
Hmm...my last manual backup was on May 22nd. The site is backed up regularly by our host but those mirror images are now overwritten for that many days back. Sorry about that. If there was info in there from May and before I can try to get that for you.

Hi Jim,
Please excuse my computer illiteracy, but is there a way to add a button that saves the meassage to an individuals personal computer Or is there a way that PMs can be sent and responded to without the knowledge of the others email( I guess this is the issue people want their email private) Like by generating an alias with only you as webmaster actually having acces to email addresses.
Josh
