heya, i almost finished T34-85 in 1:72 scale and i got an Italeri King Tiger same scale so i want to do a small dio placed in Berlin, were there King tigers in Berlin? and painting scheme for Tiger is this:

Do i have to do it like this or i can use plain simple Panzer grey or something like it?

And one more question, must i do zimmerit on it or was there some without it?

Sensei,
King Tigers didn't have zimmerit after September 44.. So most of the Henschel types probably wouldn't have zimmerit.. You don't have to paint it in the "Ambush" scheme..Many King Tigers were painted in the basic three tone scheme wuth Hull red, or Red Brown as the base and Dark Green and Dark Yellow painted over it.... Late in the war, and with a shortage of paint, some tanks were sent out in base colors only... Hope this helps..

BTW, Panzer Gray wasn't used after 1942???? (just a guess, I can't remeber the exact date/year)

Yes there were Tiger II's in Berlin. No zimmerit at that point in the war, and it is now pretty much thought that no tanks were painted in panzer gray that late either as mikeli125 said. I would go with the scheme on the box though you could do that and leave off the spots. I have also read quotes from vets who were in Berlin that said their vehicles were so dust covered that you could not make out some of the camo.

As hworth18 mentioned,by the Battle for Berlin paint quantities were very low. It seems that Panzer Yellow and Red Brown were the least common of the paints in the later part of the war. Most tanks leaving the shops were painted in a majority Green and smaller patches of Yellow and if Brown was used it was most definetly the Oxide Brown used as the primer.

There is also evidnce to suspect Panzer Grey WAS also being used in some degree. Anthoney Beaver states this in "The Fall of Berlin" also in a Concord book " Panzers in the East" ,I believe is the title, there is quite a few picture of Armour in the Yellow, Brown and Green with Panzer Grey in splotches. One of the most unusal if not intriguing was the Octopus camo. Here is a picture of aKing Tiger with camo.

And one of an E-100 with a better look at the octopus camo.

I also saw this camo in a book on Panzers on the Eastern Front as well as in a Diorama special called"The Battle for Berlin".

Hope this helps.

Thank u all for info!

Well... like the photos but i think ill go for a standard three colour scheme (with or without the spots ill decide later).

I started the assembly last night. it fits nice! it looks nice, except for the tracks... the kit comes witg both, vinyl and injection molded tracks, injection molded looks better but their trouble is they DONT have pins on the inside side of tracks... All flat???, vinyl ones have them but are a bit more ugly.... so after a hard thinking im gonna try to use mix of it becouse i need one side of track broken up and the tiger Abandoned by its crew (hatches open) when left wihout of the ammo. So T34-85 passes right next to him... ... ofc lot of dusting will be required on both vehicles...

Is this a good idea?

Yes, King Tigers were used in Berlin. Probably the last few, no zimmerit.
Apparently the last German tank to be destroyed during ww2 was a King Tiger.

I remember reading in "The Last Battle" by Cornelius Ryan about the last vehicles of the "Muncheburg" Panzer Division crossing the last bridges leading out of the city heading west ahead of the Russians, trying to escape from Berlin before the encirclement of the city was solidified. He talks about these being Panthers running on the last gallons of gas left in their tanks.

A small number of King Tigers also defended Berlin in April and May of 1945. A Tiger II from schwere Panzer Abteilung 503 was also the last German tank to be destroyed in the war. It was blown up by its crew in Austria on May 10, 1945.
whoops, looks like I got the part bout it being destroyed in Berlin wrong.
